Adoption Tails: 48 in January

 Adoptions that is. 48 is an all time record. Well done us. 

And today there were 3 more: Celine Dion (she will be beloved) and Dorian and Sterling together, at last. 

Not only that but the people who adopted Suki Sioux the "Siamese" rang to say that she is "going really well with everything."

Scout

3 days: He's as happy as Larry! Very confident and settled in beautifully! Couldn't be happier. So purry and lovely. The owners have not decided whether they will change the name yet so he is Scout for now.

1 week: He's great, currently sleeping in air conditioned comfort! Very playful and affectionate.

1 month: Scout is going really well, gaining weight and lengthening before the family's eyes. He had his final vaccination just last week and the vets are very happy with him. He's a cutie and very affectionate!

Maple, now Nina

 

1 day: Maple is settling well. She’s eating, drinking and using the litter tray. The owner has renamed Maple to Nina (after Nina Simone). She’s definitely got a loud and constant purr. Nina is actually having a nap at the moment.

1 week: Nina is doing well! Settling into her furever home. She met her housemate, Nico and they're slowly getting along with each other.

Hunter and Pippa - Both adopted on the same day but Pippa was picked up 4 days later

1 day: no response
Hunter’s 2 week & Pippa’s 1.5 week: “We have decided to keep his name. It’s very fitting, they are both adjusting well and are confident moving around the house now”

 1 month: “They are amazing. Hunter and Pippa have really come out of shells, Hunter is a proper alpha cat and makes sure to hunt down any pesky flies. Pippa is just the sweetest little thing and cuddles up every evening.”

Ranger

1 week: “Ranger has been settling in so well at the moment, on day one we had him in his little safe room but our resident cat just wanted to get to know him and they've actually been getting on so well! They love sleeping next to each other at night and playing through the day so I think he's settled in amazingly. He has eaten and used the litter tray and drinks heaps of water so everything seems good on that end. I actually think we're going to keep the name as well!”

1 month: “He's growing so fast every day. I wish he could have stayed little for a little longer but he's been doing so great”. His owners recently moved places. “we were a little worried the adjustment for both cats would have been tough but they were excellent and really kept each other company the whole time and helped each other become comfortable in the new space. They're getting on so amazingly and love playing/sleeping/grooming each other”

Cricket, now Pepper

1 day: “She’s very happy and bonding very well with my daughter. She is eating and drinking and has used the litter tray (for all functions). She is playing and exploring the room. She has been very affectionate with my daughter. We have renamed her Pepper. We are absolutely thrilled with her. She is adorable!”

3 days: They found fleas on Pepper so they will be giving her a flea treatment. “She’s still a bit skittish and wary of noises but she is settling in. She’s been snuggling up with my daughter.”

Cricket

1 week: She dashed out of the daughter’s room into the owner’s room and explored the owner’s room. She’s also followed the daughter into the bathroom. “We’ve let her out for short periods into the living area. She runs back to the bedroom if she’s startled. If there’s anywhere with dust she managed to find it (under my bed, under the buffet, under the TV)”. Her owner thinks she is very comfortable and happy. She came into the lounge room this evening. She sat on the owner’s daughter’s lap and fell asleep. Pepper meows if she wants the owner’s daughter. “They are a beautiful pair!”

1 month: “She’s doing very well. She has us well trained already. We really love her and she seems very happy. She pretty much doesn’t let my daughter out of her sight. She’s definitely found her home!”

Oscar (not one of WIllow's kittens)

1 day: Oscar's been great and started to eat/drink when he came home. They will keep his name.

1 week: He's been wonderful!

 1 month: Oscar is great and the hot spot is drying up after a vet visit with some medication.

Adopton Tails: Penwing, Diva and Scout, Gia, Earl and Dave

 Penwing, aka Angel

 They adopted JJ (Mia's kitten - now renamed to Cleo) and then adopted Penwing after she was returned to Safe.
 

1 day: The family loves her already - she is such a lovely girl! They will  change her name to Angel. She hasn't done a poop yet and only a little wee, being more nervous than Cleo was. They are taking it slow and Angel does play with them but also likes to hide away. She eats her food which is a good sign.

1 week: Angel is still in their daughter's room and Cleo goes in to play with her now. As Cleo is a bit more confident, playtime is still limited because Cleo can play a bit too vigorous for Angel. They are definitely becoming friends! Angel is aware of Lexi (the dog) but they are taking it slowly. “She’s a purry, beautiful happy girl. I’m smitten!!”

1 month: Angel and Cleo are totally settled into the family! “Couldn’t imagine life without them”. Angel is a little shyer than Cleo, but she’s not scared of Lexi anymore, and Lexi loves them both so much. Angel and Cleo definitely remember each other. They play fight, snooze together, and Angel likes to groom Cleo. “Angel is super loving, a total purr machine. Our family is complete, we just adore both our catties!” 

1 month

Their owner is very grateful for SAFE. "I just want to give them the best chance I can. Love them so much! And I'm so glad we ended up with them both, it's been the happiest outcome!"

Diva and Scout

1 day: They're doing wonderfully, super playful but also cuddly and sweet. They've used the litter tray and are eating and drinking pretty well. Scout is eating a bit less than anticipated but she's still had food.

1 week: They are going great. They rushed out of their safe room and have taken it as their domain. Diva has been renamed Piper and Scout’s name will remain as Scout.

1 week

1 month: They’re doing great! They’ve definitely grown a lot and have discovered the joys of exploring the higher spaces in the house. They’re so cuddly and sweet, both with each other and the rest of the family. They went to the vet for a checkup and they seem to be super healthy and progressing well. “We’re so happy they are part of our family”.

Gia

1 day: She’s in a room on her own and the owner’s daughter has spent most of the day near her. She appears to be eating and drinking a little bit. She has been in the litter box but has not used it, just kicked the litter around. She’s becoming friendlier and is happy to have lots of pats and is purring. She’s been moving around in the room but is still jumpy if they make a sudden noise or approach. They’re keeping the name Gia and her nickname is GiGi. 

1 week: Gia is eating, drinking and using her litter normally now. She’s still very nervous. Her owner saw her sleeping on the bed today but she jumped off as soon as she entered Gia’s safe room. They have a very excitable dog and a resident cat so they’re managing it carefully. GiGi got a fright from their dog the other day and she climbed up the timber window frame. She also met the other cat yesterday and it went quite well.

1 month: Gia has settled in well. She had a big adventure the other day - she managed to escape out of the window on Thursday and returned Monday morning. She knew where she lived, returned in one piece, and was reasonably hungry. She has met the resident cat and they tolerate one another. For the most part, she remains separated from their resident dog. She does a great job “holding her own” versus the puppy who just wants to play.

Earl

 The owner previously adopted Dave in April 2022. He was a really tiny, friendly, black kitten.

1 day: Earl is doing okay but has been quite scared. Yesterday he huddled in his carrier and didn’t leave except to eat a small amount of dry food. He also had his vaccination yesterday so his owner assumes he was also quite tired. Today, he’s eaten both wet and dry food and has peed, but has not gone poo yet. He’s been exploring his safe room a lot more. He runs to hide if someone opens the door but they’re just being patient. He met the owner’s grandma and they snuggled together. “He’s so lovely and friendly!”

2 days: Earl is in his room and he’s significantly more confident. He even followed his owner down the hall to her bedroom (while the resident cat Dave was in another room) and explored the bedroom. Dave has been really curious about Earl and has been lying outside the door meowing. The owners got back from grocery shopping and Dave is lying outside Earl’s room where they’ve been playing footsies under the door gap. There have been no claws, no aggression, no hissing or anything. She put a towel in front of the door overnight and Dave slept on it and was lying next to the door all night.

1 week: He’s going well! Both cats were really eager to meet so they let them have time together. Dave was a bit standoffish at first but now, all they want to do is to be together. His owner doesn’t keep them together constantly. They like to play rough and roughhouse, and Dave can be quite rough with Earl. They both play-fight but Dave seems to take it a bit overboard. When this happens, they are immediately separated but Earl wants to play again and gets upset if he’s separated. Neither one shows aggression, but Earl might let out a hiss when Dave goes too far. His owner took Earl to their mum’s house to see how he coped. He was very wary at first but now loves it. Yesterday, he was playing, zooming around the living room and cuddling with everyone. He wasn’t as quick as Dave to adapt to the new environment but seems to cope quite well, to the point where they struggled to get him into the carrier. 

1 week and 1 day: This morning they were super grumpy. Their owner had to separate them because their fight got aggressive. Dave is letting Earl pounce on his tail now.

2 weeks

2 weeks: The boys have been making really good progress together. They still roughhouse a lot but now their owners let them tire themselves out, and they end up sleeping next to each other. They still sleep separately overnight. This week, their owner is going to leave them together for short periods to see how they go. They’ve also been sharing food really well. Their owners have never encouraged it but would find them randomly sharing their dry biscuits as they wait for the other to finish. They have two bowls but want each other's food.

1 month: on Catio

 1 month: They’ve both been really good! They’ve both settled so well. They love wrestling and still play rough but they cuddle a lot. Their owner set up a catio in their laundry area and they love it. Their owner wanted to plant cat grass but they sleep in the pot.

 There were some adoptions over the weekend: Benny, Earl, Gia, Schmo, Scout, Sesame and Smudge.

Our cats have been moved back from next door. Their condos have been cleaned. Our cats have been rearranged on Better Row. They all seemed subdued this afternoon.

Lucy, sporting new multicoloured hair tackled the dry food shelves. They are now neatly labelled and perfectly organised. I didn't take a photo. I will take one on Friday when she has installed the proper, typed labels. I didn't take a photo of the great wall of poo bags on the back deck either. . . . too disgusting.

Adoption Tails: Phoebe, Sophia, Whitney and Scout

 Phoebe

1 day: Phoebe is very timid and has hidden under the bed. The owners have kept noise to a minimum but she is pretty committed to staying under the bed! They managed to lure her out for some pets and bring her closer to her bowls. They have set up a box with blankets (covering most of the box) in the bathroom for her to settle and have a drink as she has not used the litterbox. The family kids are older and the house is quiet so they're hopeful that Phoebe is not too freaked out. She seems to love human contact despite still "slinking" around. Their resident cat is insanely jealous and wants in to where Phoebe is staying.
1 week: Phoebe is a funny little cat. If the owner takes her out from under the bed that she refuses to come out from on her own, she is super affectionate. Otherwise, she would not budge from under the bed. The owner has been working from home as much as possible to make sure Phoebe has some company though she is a really quiet one! The resident cat has met Phoebe from a distance through a cracked open door. They had a sniff and all seems amicable.

1 month: Phoebe is settling in really nicely. She's a chirpy little cuddle bug. The resident cat is being a bit bossy though it seems to be settling down. 

Sophia

1 day: The owner adopted Maomao earlier and thought it would be good to give him a friend since she can get quite busy at times and won't be home for longer hours AND the more cats she can provide a permanent home to, the better! She is finding Sophia (now Sophie as the owner's mother find it easier to pronounce) even shyer than Maomao when he first came. She has eaten a little last night and used the litter box for a wee. Sophie did not seem to want to venture out of her little box this morning when she was offered breakfast but the owner is hopeful that once Sophie settles in over the course of the next few days, she will learn to trust her new family.
1 week: Sophie is a lot shyer than Maomao - still loves to hide in her box when the owner comes in but is definitely more active when nobody is watching as toys are in different positions every time. She is eating and using the litter box well though the owner is a little concerned that Sophie is not eating enough especially since Maomao devours his food even when he first came. Overall, Sophie is just taking her time to trust her new family and new space.

Sophia

 3.5 weeks: Sophie made her way out while the owner was in the room. The owner is ecstatic! "I can't express my happiness with words"
1 month: Sophie has actually walked out of her room pretty regularly now. She just had a wander around the apartment. The owner usually sits by the side and supervises her and Maomao. Whenever Sophie sees Maomao, she lies down on her side to show her tummy and occasionally, Maomao also does that to Sophie. The two cats are now fed on opposite sides of a door (opened by a crack). A very recent development is that Sophie will walk out of her room to eat out of Maomao's bowl (even though she has her own!) and Maomao is happy to continue eating from it afterward. One main concern is that Maomao really loves to chase Sophie around (body language seems to be playing -- no ears pointed flat and back, hissing nor claws out) and Sophie has never chased Maomao around. The two are showing good signs of getting along. Currently, Sophie is let out 20 minutes during mealtimes so that the two can mingle and so Maomao will stop chasing Sophie around. Sophie claws at the door every time she is put back inside and meows like she wants to be out again. It is definitely still a work in progress between the two but their relationship is looking quite good.

Cosmo (formerly Whitney)

1 day: When the owners first brought Whitney home, she tucked herself away for a couple of hours but then she came out at night time, wanted to play and explore everywhere. She is doing amazing settling in so far, having used her litter tray (which is wonderful). She has not been eating as much as expected though they suspect that she will eat some more once she is more comfortable. The owners have also decided to change her name to Cosmo which she has surprisingly responded to. She has since been super affectionate and has lots of yarn (knitted into squares and other craft projects) to play with!
1 week: Cosmo has definitely got her appetite back which is amazing. She is so affectionate, it has made the owners cry a couple of times. She has since explored the rest of her home at her own pace and now she is content to be their cuddle bug.

Whitney/Cosmo

1 month: Cosmo is completely settled in and everyone is still as obsessed with her as they have been since Cosmo first came home.

Scout

1 day: Scout is currently in the guest bedroom. She is eating and drinking but has not used the litter tray yet. She has explored the room a bit as Tania (the wife) noticed a key had been knocked off from the window sill. Garry (the husband) has just spent about 30 minutes sitting in the room with Scout for her to get used to him being there. She had a sniff of his hand and is definitely slowly getting used to the new environment. Tania likes the name so Scout will stay Scout.
1 week: Scout is doing well and wants company. The couple has let her out a few times to explore. Their resident cat Myf is not at all impressed with the new housemate; having seen Scout a couple of times at a distance and hisses and growls. Myf was outside Scout's door hissing the other day. Scout was lounging on the husband's lap earlier this morning.

Scout

1.5 weeks: There has been a backward step with Scout as she pooed in the dining room yesterday and the day before. She even pooed and weed today; all in the same spot. This is very likely a response to Myf. The previous morning, Myf headed downstairs when Scout was out (Myf normally stays upstairs on the owners' bed at least until they get out) and there was some hissing. There was also some hissing from Myf in the afternoon though the details are not so clear. Scout is appearing to be more hesitant with the husband and in general from Wednesday night. Scout will stay in her room for the time being until she is ready to go out again (without Myf present).
1 month: Scout is doing well. She now has free reign of the house though Myf is still getting used to the idea of sharing the house. Sometimes, Myf will ignore her but other times Myf will hiss. The introduction process is still ongoing but the relationship seems to be better than before.
