Adopton Tails: Penwing, Diva and Scout, Gia, Earl and Dave

 Penwing, aka Angel

They adopted JJ (Mia's kitten - now renamed to Cleo) and then adopted Penwing after she was returned to Safe.

1 day: The family loves her already - she is such a lovely girl! They will  change her name to Angel. She hasn't done a poop yet and only a little wee, being more nervous than Cleo was. They are taking it slow and Angel does play with them but also likes to hide away. She eats her food which is a good sign.1 week: Angel is still in their daughter's room and Cleo goes in to play with her now. As Cleo is a bit more confident, playtime is still limited because Cleo can play a bit too vigorous for Angel. They are definitely becoming friends! Angel is aware of Lexi (the dog) but they are taking it slowly. “She’s a purry, beautiful happy girl. I’m smitten!!”1 month: Angel and Cleo are totally settled into the family! “Couldn’t imagine life without them”. Angel is a little shyer than Cleo, but she’s not scared of Lexi anymore, and Lexi loves them both so much. Angel and Cleo definitely remember each other. They play fight, snooze together, and Angel likes to groom Cleo. “Angel is super loving, a total purr machine. Our family is complete, we just adore both our catties!”

1 month

Their owner is very grateful for SAFE. "I just want to give them the best chance I can. Love them so much! And I'm so glad we ended up with them both, it's been the happiest outcome!"

Diva and Scout

1 day: They're doing wonderfully, super playful but also cuddly and sweet. They've used the litter tray and are eating and drinking pretty well. Scout is eating a bit less than anticipated but she's still had food.1 week: They are going great. They rushed out of their safe room and have taken it as their domain. Diva has been renamed Piper and Scout’s name will remain as Scout.

1 week
1 month: They’re doing great! They’ve definitely grown a lot and have discovered the joys of exploring the higher spaces in the house. They’re so cuddly and sweet, both with each other and the rest of the family. They went to the vet for a checkup and they seem to be super healthy and progressing well. “We’re so happy they are part of our family”.
1 month

Gia

1 day: She’s in a room on her own and the owner’s daughter has spent most of the day near her. She appears to be eating and drinking a little bit. She has been in the litter box but has not used it, just kicked the litter around. She’s becoming friendlier and is happy to have lots of pats and is purring. She’s been moving around in the room but is still jumpy if they make a sudden noise or approach. They’re keeping the name Gia and her nickname is GiGi. 1 week: Gia is eating, drinking and using her litter normally now. She’s still very nervous. Her owner saw her sleeping on the bed today but she jumped off as soon as she entered Gia’s safe room. They have a very excitable dog and a resident cat so they’re managing it carefully. GiGi got a fright from their dog the other day and she climbed up the timber window frame. She also met the other cat yesterday and it went quite well.

1 month favourite sleeping spot

1 month: Gia has settled in well. She had a big adventure the other day - she managed to escape out of the window on Thursday and returned Monday morning. She knew where she lived, returned in one piece, and was reasonably hungry. She has met the resident cat and they tolerate one another. For the most part, she remains separated from their resident dog. She does a great job “holding her own” versus the puppy who just wants to play.

1 month: not so favourite frog hat

Earl

The owner previously adopted Dave in April 2022. He was a really tiny, friendly, black kitten.1 day: Earl is doing okay but has been quite scared. Yesterday he huddled in his carrier and didn’t leave except to eat a small amount of dry food. He also had his vaccination yesterday so his owner assumes he was also quite tired. Today, he’s eaten both wet and dry food and has peed, but has not gone poo yet. He’s been exploring his safe room a lot more. He runs to hide if someone opens the door but they’re just being patient. He met the owner’s grandma and they snuggled together. “He’s so lovely and friendly!”2 days: Earl is in his room and he’s significantly more confident. He even followed his owner down the hall to her bedroom (while the resident cat Dave was in another room) and explored the bedroom. Dave has been really curious about Earl and has been lying outside the door meowing. The owners got back from grocery shopping and Dave is lying outside Earl’s room where they’ve been playing footsies under the door gap. There have been no claws, no aggression, no hissing or anything. She put a towel in front of the door overnight and Dave slept on it and was lying next to the door all night.1 week: He’s going well! Both cats were really eager to meet so they let them have time together. Dave was a bit standoffish at first but now, all they want to do is to be together. His owner doesn’t keep them together constantly. They like to play rough and roughhouse, and Dave can be quite rough with Earl. They both play-fight but Dave seems to take it a bit overboard. When this happens, they are immediately separated but Earl wants to play again and gets upset if he’s separated. Neither one shows aggression, but Earl might let out a hiss when Dave goes too far. His owner took Earl to their mum’s house to see how he coped. He was very wary at first but now loves it. Yesterday, he was playing, zooming around the living room and cuddling with everyone. He wasn’t as quick as Dave to adapt to the new environment but seems to cope quite well, to the point where they struggled to get him into the carrier. 1 week and 1 day: This morning they were super grumpy. Their owner had to separate them because their fight got aggressive. Dave is letting Earl pounce on his tail now.

2 weeks

2 weeks: The boys have been making really good progress together. They still roughhouse a lot but now their owners let them tire themselves out, and they end up sleeping next to each other. They still sleep separately overnight. This week, their owner is going to leave them together for short periods to see how they go. They’ve also been sharing food really well. Their owners have never encouraged it but would find them randomly sharing their dry biscuits as they wait for the other to finish. They have two bowls but want each other's food.

1 month: on Catio
1 month: They’ve both been really good! They’ve both settled so well. They love wrestling and still play rough but they cuddle a lot. Their owner set up a catio in their laundry area and they love it. Their owner wanted to plant cat grass but they sleep in the pot.

1 month: best mates

My fault

On Wednesday I made a list of all Cookie and TimTam's stuff so that Irene could let the new owner know and bring a truck to pick it all up. Just making the list was too threatening. Today their new owner brought Cookie and Tim Tam back because they were not suitable in her house. And she brought back a new carry cage, a new bed, two new bowls and some litter tray liners. [Should have charged her surrender fees].

Tim Tam disappeared into the new bed and Cookie hid under an old grey blanket.

Robin dropped by to see if we need her. Yes please. Lola loved Robin and gazed out the front door looking for somebody to take her home.

Lola

Katie is always the last cat that I pat because she manages to rub herself all over my arms as I brush her. I thought it was my old, holey, red cashmere sweater she fancied, but any old sweatshirt will do.

Katie

I neatened  the other end of the linen shelves. I even managed to put together the multi-storey, crunchie dispensers that Diva and Sienna used to fight over/with. Edward and Jacob will get their crunchies that way from this evening. All the kongs are in the basket on the end of the shelf: so that if it gets knocked off there will be endless entertainment for Nom.

Molly went home (her mum did not have to go to WA after all) and the cat who was to come yesterday (Mozart) is not coming after all. Covid is mucking up the boarding schedule still.

Scary Hands

There has been lots of movement since last Friday. Somebody else needs to update the blog after the weekend.

The best news, perhaps, is that an older couple came on Sunday and adopted Diva and Sienna. They have a room of their own. They have ventured out of their carry cage. The man comes to sit in their room but is happy to wait until they want more interaction.

And Saxon has gone. Don't know where but whoever has him is one lucky person.

And Pepi has gone. Again.

In her condo is a cat "called" TBA. I hope that means To Be Adopted. But she is very shy. I left her breakfast bowl out on the shelf and she hadn't eaten it by dinner time. I gave her a modesty cloth to hide behind.
TBA

Across the aisle from her is a cat called Baby. S/he is 13 years old. Initially I thought that s/he was another shy cat because all I could see was a spotted back inside the carry cage. But I said hello and out the cat popped and was so pleased to see me that it was difficult to get a photo. My guess is that he is a male.
Baby

Kimi is another "shy" cat who is perfectly happy to get pats. She keeps herself very tidy.

Kimi
And Luna has settled down. Last week she screamed blue murder whenever anybody came near her. Today she was quiet, polite and neat.
Luna

I handed out some treats, on my fingers to try to build trust with some shy cats.
Lynette wouldn't have anything from my fingers but she is eager to engage. . . . theoretically, until you reach towards her.

Lynette

Quatro purred like an engine while trying to push the treats off my fingers so that she could eat them. She did, eventually, take them from my hand and gently nibble my fingers. Perhaps she hadn't come across any before?

Quatro

Octavia wasn't having anything to do with fingers. She didn't say a word but the eyes spoke volumes. . . . get out of my space.

New faces

We may become the shelter for shy/stray cats if this week's new faces are anything to go by.

Behind complete blackout modesty cloths are Leopold and a pregnant mum. The mum is the one who should have come when Chevy arrived. He has gone to foster somewhere. But there are 2 kittens in semi-modesty, but without names:
"Kitten 4 months"

"Kitten 8 months"

Perhaps they could be called Quartro and Octavius.

Another of Harriet's kittens, Heidi, was adopted. One of the remaining boys has an EOI. They cuddled together on their smaller hammock.
Henry, Harold, Haley

Bosely is back from his op and not feeling very well. Shumai was vet checked and has a heart murmur. Saxon is still having his water consumption monitored. He doesn't look like a nine year old.

Saxon
Nam is upset by his neighbour next door, Midnight who was surrendered for any number of reasons. She is only 1 or 2 and is loud. But the cat below who is a screecher is more upsetting to the cats, and to the gaunletted Tim. Didn't try for a photo of him/her or even to clean his/her litter tray
MidnightNam

Kimi is back from 12 months foster. She is still shy.

Kimi and Jo photographing Kimi. Tim wants better photos of Diva and Sienna for the website. Joy took hundreds by enticing them to play. (I replaced their old carry cage/bed with an identical one which is not hairy or wet (yet)/

Sienna and Diva

Should a collection of shy cats be called a blush of cats or a skitter of kitties?
Late yesterday afternoon Pepi was adopted. Hurrah.

Another ragdoll

This one, I don't know where he came from, is between 1 and 2 yo. He is a bit confused and hisses but is very happy to be made a fuss of. I thought he was a tortie because he as a gingerish blob on the back of his head. He has lovely blue eyes.

Shumai
Shumai are those dim sims that are open on top with pork inside and usually an orange garnish.

Shiba has had his name changed because Sheba is a girl's name and we only chose it because Shiba was written on the carrier he arrived in as well as his real name, Shifty. According to his microchip record, his original name was Saxon. . . . much better

Saxon

Because I did a litter run and so arrived fairly late, there was no work for me to do so I worked on the shy cats. The girl H kittens are almost OK with pats but the boys are both skittish.

I gave Buffy a good cuddle to check that she doesn't have any skin bumps after being on chicken for a week. . . . none felt and she seems much calmer/less famished. Fingers crossed. Her new person calls every week to know when she can come home.

I played ball with Sienna but she didn't want to be patted. Diva is happy to be patted but is getting very thin while Sienna looks sleek and plump. Perhaps they should be separated.

Lynette was in the mood for pats. Her tail is really thick and rather short. She is shaping up well.

 Lynette

I met Bosley for the first time. What a charmer he is! He is from a colony in Cambelltown. I suppose he has been desexed (after maturation from the size of his head) but he is pretty roughed up with a scratched nose and smells a bit. I hope he does a Peanut and cleans himself up. He has an interesting set of vocalisations! And he is as friendly as he can be.
Bosley

Jasmine is super friendly too. Get your cuddles in soon because she won't last long. She has a white spot on the tip of her nose that just begs to be kissed.

Still here

Gypsie is on hold until her new person/family gets all the things that she will need delivered via the Internet. What she really needs it to be in a loving home. . . forget the accessories. . . . cuddles will do.
Gypsie
There is a tentative date to pick her up on Oct 30.
In the meantime, she enjoyed her grass munching.

I get the feeling on Friday afternoons after Sandy has done a splendid job cleaning everybody up, that the cats see me as a grass distribution mole. Blossom leads the chorus. She has a brush in her condo. While she ate her grass, I brushed two full brushloads of fur from her.

Blossom and brush
The chorus of "Me, me, meow" by the Kitty/Kimmy/Scarlet chorus does not quite overpower the Charlie MEEEEEEEEEE.

Bailey was more interested in smooching than anything else. And Little Ging loves grass but is not still sure that people are worthwhile. His sister, Diva is all about the cuddles.

Peanuts is slowly getting to be a black and white cat rather than a cream and black cat. If we gave him a bath he would achieve tuxedo status quicker. Anybody want to give a cat a bath?
Peanuts

Jewell is very vocal. Tim and I decided that she is on heat. . . . AGAIN

Bailey's story

Sandy did a sterling job this morning. All that was left was a few dishes, etc to wash. Thank you.

So I had time to fit the washed bedding back into the shelves and feed the cats grass.

There are only two condo's of boarders on the back row. It was full last Friday. But there are 6 or 8 boarders on the front row. And Blossom who doesn't feel as though she has put on any weight despite being on double rations. She enjoyed the grass.

Charlie waited patiently for his turn. It is a pity that he is so far down the list.

The grass helped me make friends with Diva who has a wonderful purr and Little Ginj even let me pat him, for a while. And then he decided he wanted to play handsies, so I stopped playing before it got bloody.
Diva and Little Ginj

At least their sister Samantha comes out to watch the action. I haven't set eyes on their other sister Elsa who lives on the very top shelf behind her bed. The food disappears and the litter tray gets used but not while there are people about.

Samantha
Bailey belonged to an old lady who died. The family came and emptied out the house and left the cat behind. The nice neighbour man looked after Bailey for 4 years before asking the vet for help because he felt that his time was near (the man not the cat: Bailey is only 7 years old). He is a lovely boy. Wasn't the least bit interested in the grass but wanted more cuddles.
Bailey
Tortie needs cuddles more than grass too. I left her to last because she has the most flu and gave her a good body rub. Don't you love her white whiskers: one on each side, straight out like a villain's moustache.

Curtains away

Some of the cats who had modesty curtains last week have had their curtains dropped. Diva and Little Gins for example. They are some of the first litter of the queen (still without a label). Diva is a friendly dark tortie and her brother (I assume) is a shy ginger but I don't think he will hide for much longer.
Diva
Their sisters Samantha and Elsa may not have a curtain to hide behind but they keep well out of reach. As does their mother.
ElsaSamantha
But her kittens are at the stage that they need to be handled by a few people. Tim said that they hissed at him initially. . . . quite hard to look as though you mean it when you don't have teeth. But they were friendly with me. There are two gingers and two dark tabbys.

Foxy has found a foster home. She will be happy snoozing there. And Annabelle might be taken home on Friday. So I tried to comb around her head. There was a huge lump under her chin that we cut half off. She must have been a well loved and frequently groomed cat earlier in her life because she put up with the pulling and tugging while on my knee out in the open.
Annabelle

The plan is to move this blog to the Safer website. I will run it here as will until things internet settle down.
