Adoption Tails: Puss, Macadamia, Smudge, Cocoa

 Puss aka George

1 day: His owner has just gotten home and has given George some wet food. He is doing well. He had a few accidents in the carrier on the way home so they had to wash him. He is friendly and happy. “He is happy to walk around the apartment and likes to sit on the couch”2 days: “All he does is sleep. He’s sooooo happy!” He seems ravenous so they had to feed him more than the recommended amount of dry food. He met the owner’s partner for the first time today and they get along great. “I am really really happy he’s an amazing cat I am so blessed.”

Puss/George, 2 days

3 days: They tried the bed but George was greatly offended when they took him off the bed (as he was on their partner’s side).1 week: “He’s soooo happy. All he does is sleep, eat and cuddle. He’s amazing. I feel truly blessed to have him. He’s such a happy chilled cat. He’s very easy pleased.”1.5 months: “George is amazing”. He was a bit unwell for a few days with digestive issues. “He seems to have allergies to food bless him”. He was boarding at the vet when his owners were on a cruise and is all good now. He’s been home for a week and hasn’t vomited since. “He’s such a fun cat and loves cuddles. He gets brushed morning and night and loves it. He meditates with me every morning which I love.

I’m very allergic which is disappointing, but in the process of figuring that out. He is very loved and seems so happy and he’s the best decision I have ever made.”
“My partner, the same guy who said “we aren’t cat people baby” has bought him a blanket and absolutely adores him.

 Smudge, aka Walter Smudge

1 day: He has settled in well! He has been renamed Walter Smudge. After a few hours, he was very friendly and bold. He is also comfortable. He has started exploring the house under supervision. He has eaten, drunk and used the litter. He stays in his owners’ room at night and is very affectionate.

Walter Smudge, 1 day

1 week: “Walter is now the overlord of the family. He has explored other parts of the house with supervision. He is very affectionate. He is used to new guests and all the loud noises etc. And he loves watching TV.”
Walter Smudge, 1 week

1 month: “Officially we live in Walters house now. He is very affectionate.” The vet said he is possibly half Maine Coon. “The only concern I have is that if we go away we might not be able to cat board him as he is very involved in everything we do!”
Walter Smudge, 1 month

Macadamia aka Champers

2 days: He’s doing quite well and knows the house because they were his foster family. He immediately settled back in after being returned a few months ago. His name is Champers. He can jump up onto furniture but can struggle to get down. He can jump onto the couch by himself but often uses a box to get onto other pieces of furniture. They have multiple cats already and a dog, but Champers is the only cat who gets along with their dog, who loves Champers to pieces. Champers is always hungry so they monitor him constantly.

Cocoa, aka Coco

1.5 weeks: Coco is great. They decided to keep her name but shorten it from Cocoa to Coco. “She’s such a sweetie.” She’s still a bit scared and unsure of noises, such as when the neighbours come in and out of their place. She’s been keen to come out of her room so she’s been exploring the apartment a few times in the morning and evening. “She’s active in the morning and evening for cuddles and stays in her little safe spot during the day.” She’s very affectionate with the owner and their husband when she does come out. “Lots of head butts and tummy rubs! We’re both in love and at her mercy already”. She moved into a bookshelf on the first night so they made it cozy for her.

Coco(a). 1.5 weeks

1 month and 1 week: “Coco is amazing and really settling in well.” Coco is showing signs of heat so she is getting desexed tomorrow. “A bit sad that we have to upset her so soon but hopefully she will forgive us.” She snuggles in with her owner every morning and evening but is still a bit unsure of their husband. “She likes to sleep in an empty drawer under our bed in the daytime, so we’ve made it comfortable for her and that’s her safe place now!” They're hoping she can still fit into this spot when she has her cone on after surgery.
Coco(a), 1 month + 1 week

1.5 months: “Coco is much better with my husband now and is starting to chill around him. She nuzzles when he comes to her but runs away if he stands up. She even curled up beside him when he was sleeping one day which he loved to hear!”

Is there an elephant in the room?

Leo ate some chicken. He didn't eat much and he had ignored his breakfast. But I think he has enough storage to keep body and soul together until he gets whisked off to either foster or be adopted.

Leo
And Pluto ate her breakfast when I diluted it with chicken juice. Evidently the person who unadopted her is having second thoughts because they miss her purrs so much. I think we should record her purr and use it as background noise to seduce folk into adopting the nearest cat.

A couple came this afternoon to look at Yuki. And at everybody else. They like the idea of taking a difficult cat. Perhaps they will become fosterers as they already have two cats at home. All the cats liked them. They live on the other side of town but will be back.

Cocoa the sole remaining boarder has had his/her card changed to an our cat. Not happy Jan.

Cocoa
And Gia #2 has moved into the stand alone that Robyn scrubbed on Wednesday. She liked it much better in a foster home.
Gia #2
On the bright side: Mia is looking much calmer. She took chicken from my fingers.. . almost.
Mia
And Taylor looks almost clean. . . . .almost.
Taylor

Margot is almost heavy enough to be desexed. And Midnight is already 700gm at 5 weeks!

Adoption Tails: Coffee shop kids: Cocoa and Latte

Coffee shop kits when they first arrived

Cocoa

Cocoa in the Palace

1 day: Cocoa has been renamed Stuart. He's eating and drinking, however the owners don't think he's used the litter tray yet (and there's no evidence of him going elsewhere)1 week: Stuart is very curious about what is outside his safe room and had a brief exploration last night. He is very sweet and getting used to his new family.1 month: Stuart is the king of the household now. Very affectionate and loves a cuddle.

Latte (now Ponyo)

1 day: The owner took Latte home last night. Her daughter wants to call her by a new name "Ponyo". Ponyo has spent a lot of time hiding under the bed or blanket in a spare bedroom. The owner is a little concerned that she did not eat yet. She has tried to entice Ponyo with wet food and cat treats but the kitten did not show any interest. A security camera has been set up in Ponyo's room and they have seen her drink some water.

1 week: Ponyo started to eat dry/wet food and toileted on the third day the owners brought her home. She is still spending most of the time under the bed but sometimes comes out to stretch a little bit. The owner's daughter tried to sit with her last night. She got Ponyo the same toy she played at SAFE. She seemed to like it very much. Ponyo is a little shy but the owners have plenty of patience.1 month: Ponyo is such a lovely girl! She eats well and lets the family pet her. She is growing very close to the daughter who has been spending lots of time playing with her. They feel very lucky to have her as a family member!

Flu largely gone

It worked . . . . either my blog title from last week or the antibiotics . . . . but we are largely free of flu at the moment. Ginge and Sabrina are still sneezing but Florence is clear headed and full of bounce. As is Ricki. And all the snufflers in Welfare, including Dynamo, are much better. But we almost lost Star on Saturday. Terry was in today being, as usual, our hero by delivering a full load of litter from Arundel Park. He said that at 5pm last Saturday, Star suddenly couldn't breathe. Luckily Dr Kim was in her surgery and dealt with the problem. Star is on very fancy antibiotics and looks well today. All bar one of her kittens are off flu treatment.

Akela or Rafiki
Now that these kittens are getting used to us and more friendly, I must figure out who is who.

As usual, I didn't get around to taking any photos. Luckily Joy was in. Her photos are much better than mine because I use a camera and she has a fancy phone.

Bean

Cocoa (left) and Mocha

Latte

The coffee shop kittens were in the play place when I arrived. (Thanks to the poo bag fairy who only left 5 bags for me to schlepp out to the garbage cans). They hopped back into their wheely cage for breakfast and spent the day supervising from the front door.

Fern, Linda and Yoko, Mayka had turns in the play place before the Coffee kittens went back overnight.

Nobody was adopted over the weekend but Myrtle and Wanda went earlier this week. Myrtle went with an older man who came in a couple of weeks ago. His was a considered choice. Myrtle came out of her shell very well in the interim. And Wanda was adopted by an older woman. Almost all of the cats in Welfare are available for adoption now. There are 36 cats and one rabbit listed on our website!

And today, there was an emailed enquiry about Coco, the rabbit. Somebody wants a companion for their lop ear boy who has lost his mate recently but plays nicely with the puppy, has full run of the house and is getting the garden rabbit proofed! Sounds perfect. So I gave her extra cuddles today . . . just in case.

Sandy's bad day

She came early. In time to give a cat a cuddle. I had just put Tommy back into his and Mia's stand alone. Tim mentioned yesterday that he feeds Mia inside with her antibiotic laced food and Tommy on the floor outside otherwise Tommy will eat Mia's flu drugs before she has a chance. (She is a delicate little thing and he is a chunky, muscular boy). Sandy enjoyed the weight of him in her arms so much that she forgot to close the cage door. Who'd have thought that Mia would escape!

Luckily she was just under the adjacent trolley. But, because of our inept capture techniques, she decided to scale the wall and hide on top of the blue condos. So we had to move every carry cage down to the floor while she retreated into the far corner. There we hemmed her in with cloth carry cages one of which was her escape route. I couldn't quite reach her to guide her into it. Luckily Sandy has a couple of extra inches and Mia was safely in the carrier.  In the meantime, Tommy was complaining loudly that he was inside the stand alone while Mia was out!

Then we put all the carriers back.

Later when all the cleaning was done, Sandy noticed that there was some loose litter beside their tray, went to tidy it up and Tommy jumped out. She reached over to grab him and lost her footing to end up on the floor. Tommy was out in Boarding inspecting the laundry shelves. He was easier to pick up than Sandy was!

Tonight when I fed him outside and Mia inside, Tommy decided to go meet Po who is in Peanut's condo.

Po
He didn't appreciate being picked up and put back in with Mia despite the extra hammock that I installed.

Other new cats are Jackson where Blueberry was. He is a scardey cat. And black.

Jackson

In Incoming there is Dave, a black kitten, very friendly.

Dave

And Mocha, Cocoa, Latte and Bean. . . . don't know who is whom as they are a little hissy.

Mocha, Latte, Bean or Cocoa
The really good news is that Mr Magoo was adopted over the weekend. We have already heard from them:

Day1: Yeah he’s absolutely fine. Like a duck to water. Eating and drinking, doesn’t seem scared/hesitant at all, very confident. Used his litter tray too. We named him Bob (or big Bob)

Let's keep our fingers crossed that he doesn't turn into Big Bop.
