Adoption Tails: Freya and her kittens

1 day: The owner might change the name to Poppy. She's currently in the second bedroom and spends most of her time under the bed. The owner didn't see her until last night when she went in and saw Poppy's back legs and tail as she went back scurrying under the bed. For a little while, Poppy did not eat but has now since started eating, but did have a little vomit. She's also using the litter tray fine. The owner is set on persevering with Poppy until she gets more comfortable at home.

1 week: Freya is doing well - still in the second bedroom, just about ready to come out to explore the rest of her new home. She's often at the door when the owner wakes up and is getting breakfast ready. Freya is a good eater despite hiding away initially and spent her time observing. She is much better now and even sleeps out in the open on the bed in the room she is staying in. The owner will likely let her out to the rest of the house over the weekend.

3 weeks: She's escaped for a few days but has come back to eat both the dry and wet food the owner has left out near the front door, who is pretty sure the two neighbourhood cats are kept indoors during the night. 

1 month: She's eating well, doing well. Freya was just spooked by a neighbourhood cat who is quite big but pleasant and was just sulking a little. The owner leaves the backdoor open during the daytime so that Freya can walk out onto the deck and follow the sun. She's very motivated by the food and warmth so she definitely comes back by early evening. She's not terribly affectionate, the owner has patted her on the head once but the two are working on their friendship with time and patience.

 

Florence, now Jigsaw

 

1 day: She's doing great. She ate dinner and breakfast since coming home (only wet food, doesn't touch the dry food). She used her litter last night. She's been playful and prefers the carrier over her bed so the gate has been left open and she can roam around in the room.

 1 week: Florence still only finishes her wet food when fed. The owner always keeps dry food in her bowl and sometimes she'll eat a little bit of it when nobody's home but it is never finished. Other than that, she's very energetic, explores everything and loves to play.

 1 month: Florence has been renamed Jigsaw. She's doing well, really energetic and playful but can also be naughty like most kittens. She matches toddler energy and children love playing with her. The owner is a cancer patient and met one of SAFE's volunteer Holly at the cancer centre who told her all about SAFE. "Big thanks to Holly for connecting us!"

The owner previously adopted Gino, from Gracie's litter. 

1 week: Fleur and Gino have settled well with each other. It did take a good week and the owners took it slow. Certainly paid off as they are now super sweet with each other now.

Two is better than one

 On Wednesday, Irene advised me not to adopt a fostered kitten Mark to a man if he showed up because the fosterer didn't think he would be a good parent for Mark. Luckily he didn't show up. But today a nice woman and her daughter (who works with a vet) turned up to adopt Mark. On the assumption that they were quite different people I went ahead because they looked as though they would be grand owners. Later Irene turned up and agreed with my judgment. 

So Mark is off the "for adoption" list. But Florence was still there. Strange. The enclosure was empty on Wednesday. This afternoon a woman who had visited on Sunday and liked Florence returned to adopt her. "Sorry" says I "she's gone." So we looked at other black and white cats and kittens. Earlier I had let out Cooper for a wander. He ended up on the poof under the computer. I had just put him back (to have some chicken) before she arrived. So I got him out and he settled happily on her knee. Trouble is that her son wants a kitten. Sooty might suit he has got so big. Either way, she spent lots of time with a cat on her lap to test whether or not she is allergic to cats (still). And Tim removed Florence from the for adoption list.

 You will have noticed that there are more cats on the for Adoption web page. Irene came in today and helped Tim make some decisions. 

Consequently, Josh and Jake have left Josie on Better Row and moved into Bonny's condo. They trashed it within 5 minutes. So Josie must have been exerting some discipline on them when they shared a condo. With any luck, Terry will do his magic tomorrow and they will be gone.

There were also cats moved to foster homes. The three kittens who came in on Wednesday have gone to another foster home. Elsa has gone to a foster home (good luck with that wild child!) As has Tiger and the two little tabbies from Incoming.

Plus, this afternoon Annabelle was adopted by a vollie.

And Fleur was adopted by a woman who adopted another of our kittens a few months ago. He is pining for a playmate so Fleur is a lucky kitten. Florence and Freya were in a mourning ball after she left.

I have solved the problem of Barry eating Blaze's food. Put down their dishes in separate corners of their stand alone. When Barry has gobbled most of his meal, he rushes over to gobble Blaze's. Pick him up and put him back in front of his dish. Repeat this procedure until Blaze has finished most of his meal. Then when Barry rushes over, move his dish to the spot where Blaze's was and vice versa. And move Blaze to the other side of the condo in front of his dish. Barry will settle down and demolish the final few scraps that he left in his dish. I don't suppose that this will work for long. But it might work for long enough for Blaze to put on a bit of weight.

 Those folk did come first thing on Thursday to adopt Ricki. I did wonder because she was still on the for adoption list on Friday morning. The system is not perfect (which matches some of the vollies!) And Jerry has an adopter panting for him. He will be desexed next Tuesday. He was in the Play Place when I arrived this afternoon and wasn't very happy with the service there.

since going to the vet and getting a good wash (not to mention an abscessed tooth removed and treatment for his yeast infection), both Yin and Yang got out of their beds, stretched, had a poo (Yin), ate a mouthful and went back to bed. This is frenetic compared to their usual level of activity. They do like pats while in bed.

The cloth that I dropped down between them and Prue and Trude seems to be working. But I think P & T will breach the barrier unless Geoff can install something less pullable.

Adoptions Tails from foster: Prince Azriel, Timi

1 day: He’s doing very well.
1 week: He is so curious. He was exploring the house on his first day and is dying to go outside.
1 month: He has been renamed Billy. He is doing so well. He is settled, happy and very cheeky. He is one of the most affectionate kittens the owner has met and is also quite wild. “We are very happy with him”

1 day: She is settling in very well. She’s using the litter tray well and has been eating and drinking well. She has been super playful and is becoming more friendly with her owners. She has been renamed Mooncake.

1 week: She is doing well and has been exploring the rest of the apartment. She is very playful and interactive.

3 days: She is great. Her safe room is the bathroom and she loves to sleep in the sink. She is running around and playing with her new older brother Max. She chases him around and they pounce and play until they’re both tired and then they sleep across from each other. They have been eating from the same bowl and are using the same litter box. They will be keeping her name. 

Adoption Tails: Rhapsody, Florence, Dan and Coco

  It was very nice to get this message about Rhapsody on the day that Finn was adopted. Rhapsody came with Mia and four kittens (one of whom is Finn). We couldn't decide if Rhapsody was the kittens granny or aunt. She was the shyest of them all, initially. Not now:

1 day: The kids have renamed Rhapsody to Silky. She is settling in well and is definitely a lap cat. She loves her cuddles and is super chill!
1 week: Silky is getting more and more confident and is still super cuddly. The owner is surprised at how trusting she is, considering she was a street cat. She also thinks Silky is ready to explore more of the house! Silky currently spends short periods in the kid's bedroom. She gets time to explore and will get up on the bed for a cuddle. She is taking the lead with the exploration.

1 month: Silky has settled in really well. Hew new big sister is still making it known that she's the boss but Silky knows her place and they have not had any bad run-ins. Silky uses a pillow like humans, actually seeking out pillows and laying her head on it. She also will stick her entire leg into her water bowl to clean her paws.

Florence 

1 day: She’s used the litter tray and has been both eating and drinking. “Very happy and so are we”. They’re keeping her name.

1 week: “Florence is flourishing.” She is going to all rooms in the main part of the house. It’s quite at home with a three-generation household. Now likes being picked up so she can get a better view of what’s going on. She goes to her safe room when she’s tired.

1 month: Florence is doing very well. She runs the house and is allowed outside for some of the day. She comes inside by herself and prefers someone in the garden. She has also been registered with the council.

Dan

1 day: He seems to be settling in well. He is mostly comfortable under the bed but has some social times and wanders around when unattended. So far he hasn't used the litter tray, and hasn't gone anywhere else. He's eating and drinking all ok. They’re undecided about renaming him at the moment.
1 week: He is a lot more sociable and is hiding under the bed less.
1 month: No response.

Coco

1 day: Coco has settled into the bottom shelf of her owner’s wardrobe.

She is quite affectionate and is happy for them to pat and stroke her. She has had a little bit to eat and has used the litter tray. She purrs when her owner is near and stroking her. She has not made any attempt to pick Coco up. She seems OK. When she put Coco into the safe room, she didn’t seem happy so she left the door open and was looking at her owner from the wardrobe shelf this morning. She’s all cozy amongst the pyjamas. She has stayed there today. Her owner thinks she prefers to be in her room. She moved the litter and food into her bedroom for her.

1 week: Coco has moved to the other room. She seems happy to be stroked and patted. Coco pushes her head towards her owner's hand as her owner approaches.

1 month: It’s going really well! She has bonded with her owner and is very happy.

Needs must

 Some of our water spray bottles have run out of puff. I devised an alternative. Instead of spraying the cleaning paper with the spray bottle, dip it into a dish of water. Do not double dip. It works very well.  I will try to remember to buy some new water spray bottles.

Over the weekend there were adoptions: Sandy, Florence, Skittles, the last Coffee Kitten Mocha, two of Star's planet kittens and one of the supermodels Naomi. On the arrivals side we have KitKat who only eats wet food and has a sore eye.

Our Daisy visited. She had been to the vet a day or two ago to have her anal glands attended to. She was sent home with a large, opaque, hard plastic collar which she hated. She couldn't walk in it. She removed it. Her person dropped by the vet to get another. Daisy took it off in the carrier. She came on to us (having phoned before) to get a cloth collar. We will see if it stays on. It certainly looked good.

The person who adopted Hera brought in the things that she doesn't like: food, covered litter tray, metal food dishes. She is very happy with her and has renamed her Poppy. I showed her around and she would have taken them all if she had room. Bowie pulled out all the stops, of course. He likes to be held like a baby.

Rhapsody has moved into kitten Sandy's stand alone. While Sandy and I had a tea break, she joined the conversation so we moved over to beside her and she came out to sit on our knees.

But the amazing news is that Megsy has a clean bed, at long last.

Coco chaos

 Irene has been badgered by people who want Coco because she looks like a Siamese. The most persistent woman said that her friend is allergic to all cats except British Shorthairs and Siamese. She brought him along with her to test out his allergy to Coco at 1:30 on the dot. Even after I took him around to see everybody who was available he didn't have any allergic symptoms. So, either the anti-allergenic food works or . . . . . ? While I tried to get him to sneeze, she fell in love with Coco who is no more Siamese than I am.

Neither is her daughter, Skittles, who was still hiding in the carrier they were delivered in from the foster home at around noon.

We did the adoption (with difficulty but with Irene's help by phone) and Coco will stay with Skittles until she is picked up next week after her new owner's ankle operation is done. 

Later in the afternoon, a young woman came with her friend. She has badgered her mother into letting her have a cat. The first cat inside the door is Sandy, in the stand alone that housed Abbey (adopted). It was love at first sight. She met everybody else and is going to talk to mum about it.

Florence has been moved into Mayka (adopted)'s stand alone. I gave her a cuddle rug and she tried to pull it around until I slung it over her shelf and she loves it there.

Their crates in Incoming have been dismantled and removed to storage. The extra space is grand. Cass could tell that Mia's kittens needed a hammock. The three tabbies let the tuxedo sleep in it all by himself.

But come dinner time, the tabbies claimed prime feeding position while the tuxedo had to eat downstairs. I don't think they had the same mother.

Hanna, in Naughty Row is chirruping. We think she may be on heat because the boys below her haven't been desexed yet. She wants to be seen, for a change.
