Adoption Tails: Micky, Rainy, Henry, Fluff and Tango

1 day: He’s settling in nicely. “Very gregarious and already keen to play and explore.” He’s eating and drinking but ignored the litter box in favour of a quiet corner of the room for a poo. They’ve moved the litter to that quiet corner and he managed to find it for a second poo earlier in the afternoon. He slept under the bed last night but is already coming out as soon as anyone goes into the room.

1 week: Micky’s still a bit shy about leaving the room but probably because there’s an exuberant puppy wanting him to play. “Micky doesn’t seem to bothered by him but at the moment not keen to play!”

 1 month: All is going very well. Micky is quite comfortable around the entire house and also with their dog. The next step is to explore outside but he seems pretty happy still inside.

Rainy at 6 days

6 days: “Rainy is doing very well. Very settled and very playful. My kids love her”. She is toileting and eating fine but they’ve realised she can be quite fussy with meals. They bought kitten Dine and she didn’t like it but she loved Purina kitten wet food.

3 weeks: Rainy has been renamed Lizzie. She’s doing very well and is part of the family now. She goes around the whole house and up and down the stairs like her own home. “She jumps around quite a bit too!” She is very attached to the owner’s daughter.

5 weeks: “She is very good. Getting mischievous and pretends nothing happened… super cute!”

Henry

 

1 day: Henry is settling into his safe room at the moment, he's eating and drinking, quite a hungry boy. The owners are sticking to 1/8 cup of dry food 3x a day and 2tsp of wet food. He's using the litter tray. He'll be keeping his name. The owners will be going to NZ for 10 days in roughly 1 month, they are trying to see if they can get someone to house sit so that Henry doesn't feel displaced but may end up booking in some boarding with SAFE since he is familiar. They don't want Henry to feel like he's being returned. He has started to come out to eat and will even come up and purr for pats and things.

No 1 week response. 

1 month: Henry is fantastic now! He has opened up so much since the owners first brought him home.

Meatball, now Pippin

1 day: Meatball is doing well. He did not toilet until the second morning which was a relief for the owner. He is eating well, eating dry food slowly but loves the raw chicken. He also loves cuddles and be around people. Enjoying the cat bed and pet heated mat as well. They've decided to rename him Pippin from Lord of the Rings.

 1 week: Pippin is happy and playful. He loves to roam around the apartment. He has a big appetite and tends to inhale his food so the owners need to be careful not to overfeed.

 1 month: Pippin is happy, healthy and such a good eater. He plays with all his toys, climbs the cat tree and sleeps in the human bed at night. His ear yeast infection shows signs of returning so the owners will take him to the vet. Other than that, Pippin is loved and full of life.

1 day: Fluff has been renamed Gatsby and he’s settling in very well. “He plays with us, and even lets us pet him already”

1.5 weeks: He has been very confident. He has been playing around, jumping on every cupboard, biting all the plants and getting zoomies. “He’s loving life - he’s also eating, drinking & sleeping well. And enjoys his cuddles”

1 month: no response

Tango, now Hanae

 

1 day: Tango was really scared for the first few hours but has since settled in well. She has been eating, drinking, toileting, and playing a lot. She hasn’t met the resident cat as they don’t seem happy to see her.

1 week: Tango has settled into the unit very well. She runs around and plays a lot. “She seems to be very comfortable in the new environment.” The resident cat has not adjusted to Tango yet. Tango tries to get along with the resident cat who gets scared and runs away. Her owner thinks it will take longer for the resident cat to adjust to Tango. She had her 3-month vaccination this morning. She was a bit scared and the nurse needed to help but it all went well.

1 month: “I renamed her Hanae (which means flowers & smile). She is very active and loves playing with toys, running around a lot. She seems to be more comfortable now. My resident cat is not able to adjust yet but I can see her slow improvement. Hanae has brought a bright light to my life and now she is my loved family member”

Marvellous Meatball

 got adopted today. By the partner of a woman who adopted a black cat whose name she has since changed Perry. She likes to be up high on the top of cupboards and on tall stratchy poles. He likes to be at ground level. She is rather overweight so likes her food. So does Meatball. They should make a perfect pair. The lady cat will get taken to Melbourne to keep her mum company while she does her masters degree. Meatball will stay at home to keep the partner company while the girls are away during term time. Perfect.

The R kittens got a turn in the play place because the boarders went home. So I cleaned Meatball's enclosure and Geoff added the fine mesh screen that sits behind the course mesh screen that Terry installed on Wednesday. Kittens' small snouts and sharp teeth can chew through the coarser mesh (as we discovered in the neighbouring condo). It might be easier to feed them in the larger condo than in the small single in Incoming. Or it may not be.

But Tommy just wanted more time with his Geoff. Or perhaps her Geoff. She looks more and more tortie-ish. A very small percentage of torties are male cats. In those cases the male cat is sterile. Tommy has been desexed. It might have been a waste of money!

Geoff decided to let Billy get some exercise in the Top Cat. I suggested that he leave some greenies on the floor. If they aren't there in the morning, Billy might have explored.

And in Isolation the stand alone is EMPTY. Barry and Blaze are both with (separate) foster carers and both are doing very well, Irene says. Sharon scrubbed that stand alone religiously this afternoon. Thank you, Sharon.

 Terry came today on his day off to replace Dexter's mesh. I remembered to bring my needle and thread and luckily by the time I arrived (late because of DH's doc visit) he had already removed the screws, located the mesh and was on the job. Meatball was delighted that his new condo (he is now available so out of Incoming) because he got to roam around while the vollies were working so could make mad dashes out the front or back door then get chased, picked up, cuddled and settled onto another lap. 

After Terry finished his mesh, he started to repairing all the cat carriers that adorn the top of the condos. Many of them didn't have doors that fitted, or tops that stayed with bottoms, etc, etc. By the end of the day there were only 4 left that couldn't be repaired. All the rest are neatly stacked on top of the condos or in the area where goods are for sale because they are almost new. THANK YOU Terry.

And Joy was back from her eventful holiday in the UK. She tested the National Health and was delighted by the service. And for friends and relatives who made her mum's fall bearable. We will celebrate with some of her photos from today.

And Sebastian and Pebbles are in Yin and Yang's enclosure. I made new hammocks for them out of the mask fabric brought in a couple of weeks ago by a visitor.

There seems to be a wine theme going on with names. Merlot and Jerry are where Sebastian and Pebbles used to be in the corner.

And Gino Grigio and Pino Nero are in the stand alone next to Julie and Bassuria where. . . . used to be. (Having a senior moment). I installed two hammocks (old ones) for them.

Movement in photos

 Is not as desirable as movement in adoptions. But is inevitable. Trude and Prue were sitting at attention this afternoon, waiting for chicken. But as soon as I pulled out my camera one or the other moved.

 Miz and Riley have a "bonded pair" sign but they really don't act like a pair. Only one ever comes out for a wander when the door is open. Charlie likes them because they don't eat all of their crunchies and they let him come into their condo.

The folk who were going to come to adopt Yang either didn't come or got talked out of it. The sisters are both still here. Yang tends to hang out on a top shelf and Yin stays in a hidey hole. Both accept pats happily enough.

While Billy and Harley are not in the same condo (Billy is above Harley) they seem to have the one still/one moving vibe going:

I gave Harley a cuddle this afternoon and almost had to wash my face afterwards. She is very enthusiastic.

A bloke rang up about Cooper. He regularly looks after other folk's cats and wants one of his own because the hole in the house when the cat goes home is just too hard to live with. If he takes Cooper, he will be able to have other folk's cats visit because today Cooper, PC, Harry and Charlie all shared the front desk while Meatball frolicked in the corridor. Harry has been moved from Better Row to Betty's stand alone. I am not surprised that he preferred his bed on the desk: the stand alone was uncovered and hammock-less. It is habitable now.

Muffin and Venice were the last ones out in the Top Cat. (Sebastian and Pebbles had a fine ping pong ball game, Sparkle surveyed his domain and Abigail and Annabelle had a lovely time there too). I hope it is not too hard for Irene to take it down in the morning.

Movement at last

 After an adoption drought (despite the rainy weather), there have been adoptions and movements of cats.

Dexter got adopted by a man who "has experience with difficult cats". It has been 4 days which is 3 days longer than the last time he was adopted. So fingers crossed. 

And Betty has gone to a foster home. And Hermionie has gone to Katie's to live. And two of Honey's kittens have been adopted naturally including the super friendly Socks. Left are Luna, Scarlett, Patches and Panther. Honey is posted as 10 months old. What a heroine!

The Squee litter in Isolation has been moved out except for Pumpkin who is still there and being treated as infectious. Two have . . . ? been adopted. . .. disappeared. And two are in Dexter's condo. They are still dedicated to eating.

We have new cats on Better Row. Moet and Jerry were surrendered. I will try to find out why. They seem to be a lovely pair. Jerry is the ginger male who is friendly. Moet is the ginger and white girl who is wary. Or the other way around!

As are Theresa's big cats in the stand alone in Incoming. They are very food oriented. They loved it when they were getting 2 month old kitten rations.

Trude and Prue would like to go back to those good old days. But with patience, Sue is getting them used to being touched.

And for entertainment we have: Meatball, PC and Derek. Meatball is a comedian, PC is an opportunist, Derek is a fanatic (aka a kitten).

Lost cat found

 Lola seems to have accepted her new, smaller stand alone. She does spend all of her time in Opies room except for a foray into her standalone if her breakfast is not delivered to her there. So her erstwhile larger stand alone is now occupied by Rubia and Ryan. Ryan has been desexed and is ready to go. Rubia needs a vet check etc. They only had one hammock and Ryan slept in it all day with Rubia on a hard shelf. I took pity on her and installed a second hammock. Which he promptly claimed.

I also changed Mia's narrow hammock for a wider one. I've never seen her using the narrow one. But soon after I installed the wider one. . . . . sorry about the silly camera which focuses on the foreground, but you get the idea.

There were scads of volunteers so the work got done early and every cat that wanted a cuddle got one. Yin and Yan actually ate their breakfast so I spent time with them and was rewarded with purrs and nudges for more. They are sweet cats.

Helen came to help this afternoon. She wanted Meatball to have time out. And he had a fabulous time chasing a ping pong ball. . . . and careening into bits of furniture. The expression on his face was just like that on the sticker cat on Tim's filing cabinet.

We let Cooper out for a wander early in the afternoon. He went around introducing himself gently to the other cats and settled on the odd person's lap. He spent lots of time on the shelf on the back wall of Welfare communing with Raya (or is it Raven). Everything went well. Until it came to feeding time and he wasn't in his stand alone (Charlie had been there earlier). After a search I found him on the poof under the front desk. Sensible cat.
