Adophion Tails: Josie's kittens and Rubia & Ryan

 Josh aka Remi

2 days: Josh is settling in very well. He is already curious and exploring around the house. He is eating well, drinking well, and using the litter tray regularly. He has a safe spot in their daughter’s bedroom and likes to stay in there when they are not home. He is a very playful kitten and is always purring and running around. His owners are considering renaming him Remi which they think suits him very well.

1.5 weeks: Remi’s doing well! He no longer hides under their bed and is always playing with his toys. He has been more confident and plays in every room in the house.

1 month: “Remi’s grown a lot since we first saw him”. He’s getting much happier with his new family than he was in the beginning. He’s still eating well too.

Jake aka Jack

1 day: no response

1 week: no response

18 days: “Jack is very comfortable here” and brought his family good happiness.

1 month: “Everything goes well. Very busy and very funny with the new family member.”

Rubia aka Maple

1 day: She is settling in really well. She only hid under her owner’s bed for an hour. After she popped out, she became immediately affectionate with her owner. “I was really surprised with how fast she opened up to me. I still think she is taking in her surroundings and getting used to things, but I’m really excited to see how she progresses.” She has been eating all of her food and drinking. She has used her litter box a few times to pee but has not gone poo yet.

4 days: She seems to be sneezing a lot and her owner noticed her eye is red and swollen after coming back from work. Her owner has settled on renaming her Maple.

5 days: Her eye seems better so she must’ve had something stuck in it. She is still sneezing fairly frequently with a lot of clear discharge. She also seems less energetic.

2 weeks: no response

1 month: Maple is doing very well and she has settled in comfortably. She loves to sit on top of me in the mornings and stare at me until I wake up.” Every day, she brings all of her toys downstairs while her owner is at work, and in the evenings, she brings them all back up to her owner’s bed one by one. Her owner thinks she has learnt she gets a piece of kibble every time. “She seems to be very motivated by food, even when I’m eating and cooking she gets very curious.”

Ryan aka Prince - no photos
3 days: He is “eating like a horse” and is using the litter tray. He is generally enjoying the house and has bonded with his owner’s daughter. He has been renamed Prince.

1 week: no response

1 month: Prince is going well. He is very playful and eats well. He loves playing and his favourite toy is a ping-pong ball. “I am a mere provider of meals to him at the moment (I’ve always been around cats, but for some reason Prince just ignores me) but he loves my daughter and wife. He sleeps on my daughter’s lap.”

Consequences

Because Jake and Josh got adopted their condo became available for Liam.

Because Liam moved away from his "mother",  she promptly dropped another kitten in Incoming! I didn't get a photo. The kitten is too small and mum looks plump enough to have other kittens still to come.

Because Ryan and Luna got adopted (separately), Hansel and Derek moved into the front door stand alone and had a wonderful time in a space 6 times, at least, as big as their condo in Incoming.

Because Queen Victoria got adopted, Pickles was moved into her condo. He wasn't really pleased but I think he will enjoy watching other cats more than watching food.

So that means there are 3 empty condos on Better Row. Irene won't be able to resist that for long. She has 11 cats/kittens at her house.

And because a previous adopter dropped by few weeks ago to visit the cats and admire the hammocks I have two big bags of fabric scraps to make into hammocks. She was in the business of making face masks during Covid and has lots of left-overs.

And because an ex-vollie was collecting bedding for charity, she thought of us and rang to ask if we needed any fitted sheets. . . . no, thank you; blankets. . . . . no thank you; towels. . .. yes! please!

And, because we were busy I didn't get out my camera so here is an old photo of Dexter who made a dash for freedom during his condo cleaning. His cleaner was too wary of getting bitten to pick him up. But he is very good for me. . . . famous last words?

Dexter

And a photo of my Cody who is a Safe adoption. Sharon picked up her Leo this afternoon. He was very pleased to see her after being abandoned with us for 5 WHOLE DAYS!

Two is better than one

On Wednesday, Irene advised me not to adopt a fostered kitten Mark to a man if he showed up because the fosterer didn't think he would be a good parent for Mark. Luckily he didn't show up. But today a nice woman and her daughter (who works with a vet) turned up to adopt Mark. On the assumption that they were quite different people I went ahead because they looked as though they would be grand owners. Later Irene turned up and agreed with my judgment.

So Mark is off the "for adoption" list. But Florence was still there. Strange. The enclosure was empty on Wednesday. This afternoon a woman who had visited on Sunday and liked Florence returned to adopt her. "Sorry" says I "she's gone." So we looked at other black and white cats and kittens. Earlier I had let out Cooper for a wander. He ended up on the poof under the computer. I had just put him back (to have some chicken) before she arrived. So I got him out and he settled happily on her knee. Trouble is that her son wants a kitten. Sooty might suit he has got so big. Either way, she spent lots of time with a cat on her lap to test whether or not she is allergic to cats (still). And Tim removed Florence from the for adoption list.

Sooty's new neighbours are Derek and Hansel. They intertwine.

Tonight Harley and Quin will have a night out in the Top Cat. Jake and Josh will be so jealous.

While Lily and Patch look on.

I think we should have a two for one special in June and July.

Movements

You will have noticed that there are more cats on the for Adoption web page. Irene came in today and helped Tim make some decisions.

Consequently, Josh and Jake have left Josie on Better Row and moved into Bonny's condo. They trashed it within 5 minutes. So Josie must have been exerting some discipline on them when they shared a condo. With any luck, Terry will do his magic tomorrow and they will be gone.

There were also cats moved to foster homes. The three kittens who came in on Wednesday have gone to another foster home. Elsa has gone to a foster home (good luck with that wild child!) As has Tiger and the two little tabbies from Incoming.

Now in a foster home
Plus, this afternoon Annabelle was adopted by a vollie.

And Fleur was adopted by a woman who adopted another of our kittens a few months ago. He is pining for a playmate so Fleur is a lucky kitten. Florence and Freya were in a mourning ball after she left.

I have solved the problem of Barry eating Blaze's food. Put down their dishes in separate corners of their stand alone. When Barry has gobbled most of his meal, he rushes over to gobble Blaze's. Pick him up and put him back in front of his dish. Repeat this procedure until Blaze has finished most of his meal. Then when Barry rushes over, move his dish to the spot where Blaze's was and vice versa. And move Blaze to the other side of the condo in front of his dish. Barry will settle down and demolish the final few scraps that he left in his dish. I don't suppose that this will work for long. But it might work for long enough for Blaze to put on a bit of weight.

Too busy to take any photos this afternoon. I even forgot to eat my lunch. Some photos from Wednesday.

Cooper got a little walk this afternoon

One of the Wednesday vollies wants Bubbles. Today I learned that one of the Friday vollies wants her too.

Bubbles

Sebastian and Pebbles are on the for adoption list. We must get them out of the corner.

Coco

Again, thank you Tuesday for schlepping out all the bags. But Willoughby council only emptied one of our trash bins! The other is full already. I put the empty one in the garage and left the full one where it was put along the pathway down the hill. Who put it there? It was with all the rest on the gutter when I arrived. The mysteries of trash collection!

Coco, our frequent boarder was in the play place when I arrived. She wasn't happy. Eventually I thought that she might be happier back in a condo where she is usually happy. I talked her out of the multi-storey climby thing to somewhere I could pick her up. I think she couldn't figure out how to get out if where she was. The story is that her owner, a SAFE member, had a heart attack on Saturday and Coco was to be with us indefinitely. Later in the day, we had a call from the owner to say that she would pick Coco up this afternoon. She duly arrived and Coco was overjoyed to see her. I held her carry case up to the condo and Coco walked straight into it. Easiest cat to crate in existence!

Lola kept trying to get into Incoming. Eventually Sue gave her a new bed on the table in Opies Room and she was a happy cat snoozing the afternoon away.

Several calls came in about Ricki. All from the family of the neighbour of her foster carer. They wanted to reserve her. But we don't do that. It is "first in, first served" at Safe. But by the time I had heard the sad story of the neighbour's lovely cat having died yesterday, and how much they loved Ricki, and that they really could not get to us this afternoon, and that they will be at Safe at 10am tomorrow. . . . I said that if any other customers came this afternoon, I wouldn't show them Ricki. Luckily, no customers came.
Ricki

Sue had me writing bios of the cats who are not available for adoption that she can use when she needs instant bios. It is not easy to do. For example what do you say about Willow except that she has hidden for 4 months and seems to be coming out of her shell now.

Willow
Or about Harley and Quinn who have only been with us for a week and in that week have changed from scardey cats into coy young girls who long to flirt with you.
Harley and Quinn (or vice versa)
Or about Stardust who was one of three crazy cats in the Palace who is now a pussy cat as a single.

Welcome Joy

Joy came to help this morning. We certainly needed the help because it was busy. There are new protocols to stop the spread of cat flu which are posted on the condo near the door between boarding and adoptions.

The "brother" of the mother cat who came last week is a girl. She is below Blossom and behind curtains. Next door are Jewell's kittens who have been weaned. They don't seem to mind but Jewell is still demanding breast feeding rations.

Jewelettes
Elsa, from her previous litter, has emerged, somewhat. She now hides in full view in the cubic bed. . . just a matter of finding the right bed.

Elsa

We have a new cat for adoption called Pepi. He is still overwhelmed.

 Pepi

Initially it looked like it was going to be quiet so Tim decided to run some errands.

Jake
Soon Jake's family arrived to pick him up. Luckily Tim wasn't far away so he could come back to tell them how to reintegrate Jake and collect the boarding fees.

Then a family arrived to inspect the boarding arrangements. Luckily they want a couple of weeks at the end of November. It seems that Christmas is almost fully booked, already. I showed them around while Tim talked to Jake's family.

Then a lady arrived with a donation and wanted to see the cats. I walked her around.

Poor Joy was left doing most of the work.

Gypsie

As I was swabbing the floor another lady arrived to adopt Gypsie. She had been in on Sunday, brought her husband in yesterday and today she needed to discuss all the gear that Gypsie will need. She will be a very spoiled, much loved cat. . . and thoroughly deserves to be.

Liz away, we have fun

Liz was away today and there were five volunteers to try to replace her.

She missed the fun of the arrival of our latest litter. A friend of SafeR has been feeding a pair of kittens in Brookvale. She realized that one was about to have a litter so put out a dog carrier and feed her in there. This morning the cat was finally in the carrier when she arrived (the cat was in the process of having her babies!). So she shut the door and high tailed it to Safe Haven.
As soon as the carrier door was opened to put the mum into a condo, she hightailed it to the top of the condos, well out of reach. We didn't take long to "guide" her back to her babies. There are four of them. Mostly black with some white touches (just like Mum). They are well disguised in this photo:
Across the aisle, Kitty, Scarlet and Kimmy were fascinated.
PS. The mini mama I picked up in Blacktown and delivered to Avalon, has had her litter. There were five. One didn't make it. She is being a very protective mum.

By the time these day old babies are as old as Jewell's bubs, they will have their own condo too. They are three boys and a girl. The girl is the clear eyed tabby. All the boys let me pick them up and turn them over to tickle their tummies. She wasn't having a bar of that!

(We should have a naming competition: Jasper, Jett, Mica, Ruby?)

Meanwhile, Jake (the spraying cat) has had his undescended testicle removed. No wonder the poor boy was acting like an entire male. . . he was one (or, more accurately, half of one). He had been medicated against his natural chemistry.  Already after his operation, he has settled down: no more calling, mounting and very little, not so smelly spraying. Let's hope that he has a chemical free future.
