 1 day: The owner will be changing the name from Jane to Janey. She has not eaten and not used her kitty litter yet. She did not meow on the way home whilst being in the car, "she must be frightened, poor thing." On arrial at home yesterday, she hid under the dresser but had moved to a kitchen table seat when the owner woke up this morning. She spent most of the first day in the bedroom under the dresser with the room door slightly opened. She had since found comfort by being on the dining room chair under the table as it is quiet, secure and a good hiding spot. The sliding wardrobe in the spare room is slightly opened so she can also hide there. The owner has the cat carrier with Janey's towel on top and blanket inside but she has yet to go back inside it. The owner is confident Janey will settle in, just takes time. 

 

1 week: Janey is eating, drinking and toileting very well. She is still quite timid which is to be expected but the owner is sure she will come around in her own . She likes to hide by sitting on a tucked in chair by the dining table to watch the owner while she’s in the kitchen or sitting on the sofa.

1 month: Janey is settling in well. She is incredibly timid and hides most of the time, but does have her zoomies in the wee hours of the morning which the owner is happy about. She has attempted to get close to Janey but is not well received so she lets her be. Janey is a great eater which makes the owner happy. When she is home in the evening, she does walk around albeit cautiously. The owner is confident that it will take a long time but Janey will get there. "She is wonderful and I love her". The owner has tried to play with Janey but she shied away and didn't seem interested. She also doesn't seem to play with the cat toys around. The owner will consider some sort of treat puzzle to engage with Janey.

 When I arrived there seemed to be all the kittens running around the Main room floor . . . aided and abetted by vollies and a small boy. They had a lovely time because Maggie's kittens have been moved out of the play place into one stand alone and a condo and they have a serious playtime mojo!

Eventually they got put back and other cats were allowed out for Robyn to take photos of. She is helping to write up profiles of the cats for the Safe website. In the quiet time before she arrived, I opened Jane (Juliette)'s door. She ventured out much further than before. Doesn't look like the weight management crunchies work too well if you don't get any exercise.

Jagger had popped into her condo earlier and she wasn't pleased. And it doesn't look like Devo was impressed by him either. They both need a name change perhaps.

Audrey (from the same foster home as Junior and Lucy) is bold and loves to play.

But her condo mates would rather stay in. Robyn forced them out by giving their condo a good, overdue, scrub. Soon as she was done, Sidney and Sophia moved back into their black bin.

Who's who in the Play Place

 The usual crowd of four been there since last Friday. At least, turning the tall scratchy pole around has stopped them from toppling it over during their night time partying. I sent Jayde in with the microchip reader to try to sort out who is who:

Sammy (.....594) has large black spots over both ears with a straight, white line between.

Cypher (....599) has large black spots over both ears that meet in a V in back and front. This looks like a white egg timer-shape on his forehead.

Bambi (...118) has tabby markings on her tail.

Thumbelina (...119) has small black spots under her nose that make a heart shape.

Katie and I think that they don't need to go as two boys separate from two girls. They seem all happy with each other although the girls are shyer than the boys.

Lily got adopted yesterday and Kiki has been moved into her condo today. Maggie was then moved to Kiki's top condo because her mum Lisa was adopted yesterday too. She didn't like it much up there initially but will get used to it. Plenty of vollies will give her cuddles. Dan(ger) moved into Lisa and Maggie's condo this afternoon. About an hour later a couple of girls came to look for a cat to be friends with their puppy. Their mum liked Dan best (she was there via Facetime). So Dan when home with them. He will be able to cope with the whippersnapper dog.

He may be back over Christmas in boarding. We got Princess and Precious out of the corner of no adoptions to the double under Nada. She must like their smell because she was out lying on the connection door this afternoon. Or was she remembering Diego's visits and discouraging any more invasions with her, not inconsiderable, weight?

Baby is back from foster because she doesn't like to be part of a multi animal home. She wants to be the one and only.

Skeley has had another name change. First she was Skeletor, now she is Sophie. Whatever the name, she is still a scardey cat.

After chicken, I went back to boarding and Juliette looked up at me a blinked. More chicken magic.

Good news

Romeo and Juliette were adopted over the weekend. It seems that they are settled into a room and hissing at their new owners. And, as predicted, George was adopted too. I imagine that he is sleeping with them and telling them when he wants to eat.

Sue or Slav?

 We have, in the last 5 years taken in almost a 1000 cats and dogs. We are up to 995 with Slav, our latest Good Samaritan rescue today. The woman who brought her in said that we should call her Sue.

Where Simba and Khandi were is another exotic sounding family of 6-12 month olds (closer to 12 months, I'd say): Akela, Rafiki, Diego and Samira. We needed another Diego! They were hiding in their carriers and I can't see 4 cats. Somebody must be being sat on.

And next to Amelia we have Chloe who is pretty but stunned that she is where she is not where she would rather be. . . . at home.

 I put Tommy and Mia into the play place this afternoon mostly so that I could have a good cuddle with Tommy before he and Mia get collected on Sunday. He is a marvellous lap cat. I even managed to trim 6 of his nails. Mia accepts caresses but is not quite up to a lap.

Back in the 90's

 We had 90 cats and 2 rabbits this morning when I arrived. But 4 (or 5) boarders arrived and two went home so we are still over 90 but not quite to 100!

The garbage men were VERY early this morning. When I arrived at 6:50am, they had already collected the commercial as well as the residential bins. Which means that every vollie should take home at least one bag, please, because I didn't have the opportunity to put our extra 18, or so, bags into other peoples' bins. And those were last week's bags. We will have more bags this week because of more cats. 

The Canin condo has been moved into the main cat room with its cargo of Sabrina and her kittens.

The only way to control five of the kittens is to put them into a carrier. It is a very full carrier. Lulu (the short haired tuxedo sticks close to Sabrina).

A woman rang early to get directions to come to meet Romeo and Juliette. I quickly cleaned their condo to make them ready for visitors. It required Gumption. The whole family arrived. The rather deaf mum  wants a cat (or two) to replace her beloved but stand-offish previous cat. Her husband, her daughter and her grandson (last two visiting from the UK). Romeo and Juliette were overwhelmed and hid in their carrier, together. . . . or was it the lingering smell of Gumption? Disappointed the family asked to see others. We went through the lot and husband, daughter and grandson liked Trixie the best. She behaved beautifully and purred in everybody's arms. But the mum was hesitant about the potential cost of her swollen salivary glands and decided that she liked one of Sabrina's best. They are not yet available but probably will be tomorrow.

Coco had demolished her box and I couldn't find a suitable replacement so gave her one of the "cat towers" that teeter on top of the D kitten's condo. She loves it. When she has chewed her way through the tower I will put $5 in the donation box.

Between these visitors and the boarders and their owners who kept coming and going, and being two vollies down, it was a busy day. A man even came to sell us some kind of Vet Clinic package. A woman came from the local funeral home to give us stuff left over from her recently dead pug (at 12 and a half years old, he was a very old pug) and cat beds. So busy that we didn't have time to make a fuss of Mayka who has graduated to the next age group. No more kitten food for her.

Speaking of food, we are desperately short of wet food. If you have any that your cats have rejected, please donate it to the Safe cats.

Sick kittens galore

 I was too busy to count the number of cats this morning. Amy's wheely is filled with a mum [Sabrina] and her 6 kittens one of whom has a UTI, 5 have the flu and one, smaller than the rest and a smooth haired tuxedo looks perfectly well. He sticks close to the mother. I wonder if he is her kitten? 

 [Later Irene added: Lulu, the black and white tuxedo kitten in the glass cage is not Sabrina’s kitten. The lady who rescued Sabrina had trapped a spare kitten and just added it to the family.]

And Wanda's little grey adoptee (named Midsommer) has stuck-closed eyes that need to be bathed open and ointment applied as well as an eighth of a pill given. And there are two kittens from a foster home with ringworm. The friendlier one isn't as badly affected. It is the shy one that has to be ointmented. And they both have to have nasty medi.

We had a delivery of 20 litter trays. They each came in a separate cardboard box wrapped in two pieces of bubble wrap. Luckily, the bloke down the corridor spotted the flattened boxes and took them all plus the bubble wrap. He is the nice father of the girl who loved Chris and who has two dogs in his office all day.

A woman came to meet Romeo and Juliette whom she rather fancied from the web site. 

Her partner fancied Ziggy. We took videos of her relating to those cats. Then she spotted Augustus who is a kiss magnet and she went away without a cat.

She did buy a T-shirt and gave us a donation. I expect they will be back on the weekend.

I introduced her to Max. He bit her when she got too friendly.

Sandy sideswiped

It was her car, not her, sometime during the morning when she was slaving away doing angelic deeds. Unfair! Riley was being adopted as I arrived. She is to live with a primary school aged boy and a big brother cat. They know that she doesn't like to be picked up but are prepared to play with her until she gets used to the idea. Coco and Mason were in the play place overnight. Jasmyn was sitting with them when I arrived so I grabbed the nail clippers and she held squiriming cats while I clipped off gigantic claws. Coco's in particular looked dangerous because they were large and pearly against her brown fur. Front and back paws were done so they shouldn't get caught up in their bedding and come to fistycuffs any more. After fogging the playplace, Megsy had a go. He loved it (and tolerated having his front claws trimmed: he kept getting his feet caught while exploring all over). Late in the afternoon a woman dropped by with a donation of food for cats and dogs. I popped her into the play place with Megsy and she would have taken him home because he was so loving. But her parents would "kill" her. Everybody reacted well to chicken. Some cats are getting easy to stroke, eg Silky. But others are resistant eg Marigold. Gingey just wanted the cuddles. Santa Maria too. I can see why her kittens like their box. She happily stays in her condo box all the time. Patches (or is it Snowy) was more interested in hugs than chicken and climbed all over me while I tried to engage Ginger and Snowy (or is it Patches) in the box.

I am tying to update the photos on file so that every cat has a picture. My computer refused to do it for a while but it seems to be working now. So I took photos of Romeo and Juliette. Still one in front and one behind the cat carrier.

And I tried to take a good photo of Dolly but it is impossible. She just wants to crawl into your arms and snuggle. Velcro would have been a more descriptive name for her.

Musical condos

Stop the music when Prue is exhausted. Because Pearl went to the vet this afternoon, Irene, with Tim's approval, instituted a major move of cats. All those who are available are out front, those who need more time are out back and only boarders are in Boarding, except for Kendra. Kendra and her kittens are on special diets. Kimmy was very flat today so was put into the sick bay in the outer office. She yelled so loudly that they brought Kate to keep her company. It perked Kimmy up.

The person who adopted Sage came back and adopted Sugar as well. How sensible is that! And a nice man came in looking for a black and white cat (not a kitten) and was talked into Sammy. So two wheely cages were free. I moved Roscoe into Sammy's and Whiskey and Socksie into Sage's. They were delighted to be out of the outer office. And first thing they did was to introduce themselves to their neighbours. Later Steph came, with lashings of litter, and spent lots of time giving them all cuddles which was exactly what they (both 2 and 4 leggeds) all needed.

And Coco the 11 year old Burmese arrived. She is in Celeste's condo. I don't know where Celeste is . . . . I hope in a foster home. Strange that we have two Burmese cats in residence and they are both called Coco. This Coco will not be with us for long, is my guess.

I moved Baxter into Roscoe's condo. Pearl went into Baxter's condo out back when she got home from the vets. I moved Misty into Pearl's condo and then Romeo and Juliette into Misty's condo (that was an exciting job as Romeo decided not to be picked up but did a runner from the carry cage that I had enticed him into with chicken. He ran into Myuki's condo mid sterilization and I cornered him into the carrier to deliver him to his girlfriend. Neither seemed very thrilled.) A lovely couple came and adopted Mako. He was posted on Facebook and Instagram and created a positive storm of interest. The new owners are experienced with shy cats and I think he will settle well with them. I moved Myuki into Mako's condo and then Anthony and Cleopatra into Myuki's condo. In between each move the condos were sterilized, of course. I am knackered. But I did manage to update all the sheets that tell which cat is where.
