Adoption Tails: Lucy, Luna, Rory and Squeak

 Lucy

1 day: Lucy spent the whole day in the carrier when she first came home. At night, she left her hiding spot to eat some dry food. In the morning, she was still hiding but started exploring the room in the afternoon and even ate some wet food. She has yet to toilet but found another hiding spot under the desk and remained in that spot when the owners got home.

 1 week: Lucy is really good. Snuggling with the owners on the sofa, playing with toys and loving her food. Even coming in the mornings to say hi. Basically treats the house like her own for a bit already. The owners are just wondering what her story is as Lucy is terrified of the vacuum and spooked by any door noise.

 1 month: Lucy is all good, she has become a professional couch cat. She has really settled into the apartment and grown attached to the owners.

Luna

2 days: “She’s settling in well.” She’s using her litter box, eating, and drinking. She has been renamed Lola.

1.5 weeks: Lola is “happily ruling the roost”. “She’s a lovely snuggle bunny.”

5 weeks: “She’s settled in very well and is a gorgeous addition to our family”

Rory and Squeak

5 days: “Rory and Squeak are doing great at the moment. They’re completely settled in to their safe room and are eating, drinking, using their litter tray, playing etc. We haven’t decided yet whether we’ll be renaming them or not, but we are considering it”

2 weeks: “Rory and Squeak showed LOTS of interest in being outside of their safe room before the week was up however we kept them there for a week as needed. They’ve been free to explore the rest of our flat for the last few days and are loving it, stretching their legs and being very inquisitive and cheeky!”

1 month: “They’re doing absolutely great - they love chasing each other up and down the halls. They’re growing so fast and getting stronger and more adventurous every day.“

Adoption Tails: Sparky, Lucy and Junior, Max

 Sparky, now Sparkle

1 day: Sparky slept in the bed last night and broke the bedside lamp (which the owner did not like so "Well done Sparky". He has toileted and had some wet food which he quite liked. The owner is off to the pet shop to get some more essentials for Sparky and is keen to set up a direct debit for a donation.

No 1 week response

1 month: The owner found out as he went into his local council to register Sparky that Sparky is in fact named "Sparkle" and this is what he will be sticking with. "Sparkle is a stellar champion!" The owner has been experimenting and settled on a diet that Sparkle likes. The owner will put the food down and turn around and the food will be gone versus tolerable/disliked food that will take all day or even go untouched. 

The owner plans to introduce a dog (Chihuahua and Jack Russell cross) named Billy who may become a regular visitor if Sparkle and Billy get along. Billy will be in a carrier for Sparkle to meet at home and the first few visits will stay this way until they become accustomed to each other. All in all, Sparkle is well settled in at home, coming up to the owner's ankle for pats and initiating games. "Truth of the matter is that Sparkle saved me."

 

Lucy & Junior, now Pepper & Ginger

1 day: They're doing great. Lucy, who the owners are now calling Pepper, is so affectionate and Junior, now Ginger, is pretty shy but has come out of the cat cage for food and water. They've both used the litter tray. They are both so sweet and the girls were up at 6am this morning, playing with Pepper. The owner even introduced Pepper to her team over a work Teams call as she was sitting on her lap. Ginger is taking a little longer and definitely prefers it when it's not so noisy (with the kids).

 1 week: They're both just gorgeous. Ginger is slowly getting used to the family and sits with them in the evenings now. Pepper is so cuddly. Naomi (one of SAFE's day managers) will visit the family soon.

Junior now Ginger

1 month: They're both doing so well. The family loves them. Ginger has totally come out of her shell and loves being picked up and having cuddles. Pepper loves all the attention and wakes everybody up first thing in the morning for breakfast. Pepper and Ginger like to sit outside on the verandah which is enclosed with pool gates so they can't get out. They get some outside time but they're not allowed out into the bush. "They're a fantastic addition to the family and we are all smitten."

Max

Max was adopted by Cherry's owner (adopted back in Nov 2021)

1 day: Max is doing well. He is in his own room and has been eating, drinking and using the litter tray. The owner has also been in contact with Tim for advice which they have been following. Max loves to sit on the owner's desk, especially during meetings.

1 week: Max has settled in well, however he and Cherry (resident cat) do not get along at all. Cherry is still hissing and growling at Max and Max would chase her down. The family is still trying different ways to get them to play nice.

1 month: Cherry and Max aren't getting along unfortunately but they're both boarding at SAFE for the next few days so hopefully they have a chance to reset when they both return home and play nice with one another.

Alice & Belle, now Astrid & Ishka

Alice and Belle's mum is Cleo, whose follow up was an Adoption Tail on Jan 3, 24. 

1 day: Astrid and Ishka are hiding in the big box the owner has put in their room (as the owner expected). There has been 1 poo and a little bit of food has been eaten but not much. The owner expected a big regression. She is giving them the room to themselves and only going in the morning, before bed and once during the day. Hopeful that they pick up regarding food by tomorrow and that she can spend some more time in the room after the weekend.

1 week: They are going well, eating with gusto! The two have yet to explore and spend a lot of time in the wardrobe, especially Ishka but they do play and cuddle with the owner too. The resident boy cat is doing his best to ignore the fact that the room Astrid and Ishka are in exists. He makes sure to tell the owner off when she comes out of there! She thinks the two will be in the room for at least another week before she tries and moves to the next stage of introduction. They are bonding really nicely and she is already in love with them. She thinks they quite like her too!

1 month: Ishka is super confident now and is so affectionate! Astrid is lagging a little bit and unfortunately has peed on the owner's couches, bed, hall and bathroom floor. She is also using the litterbox properly and eating well so quite clearly a stress reaction though the owner is unsure what is stressful. The owner has since closed off the bedroom and loungeroom to give her less space and hopefully help her feel more in control. Jupiter (resident cat) is being really good with them, hanging out in the same room as them and licking both on the head at least once a day. The owner is really happy with how they are all going, individually and together. She is hopeful that Astrid will continue to improve and the peeing will stop, if not she will take Astrid to the vet for a check.

 

Alice and Belle's mum is Cleo, whose follow up has been sent by Sydney earlier this year.

Flip a box

 Holly got out of her box at breakfast time for a pat. So later in the day, I tried to find her a larger box that she could sit up in. I couldn't find or make one. So I tipped her box on it's edge. She can sit as well as lie in it this way and it is wedged under the shelf so won't fall over.

Of course, she didn't like it. She migrated upwards to her top shelf where she made eyes at me, accepted pats and long body strokes and eventually purred. She climbed into the hammock for more cuddles. Vicky gave her more. She is a reformed cat.

Her erstwhile partner, Tiger, didn't eat, poo or wee overnight. He might have the flu.

Annie is back from the vet and Arlo has been ejected from the hammock while she recovers from being desexed as an adult. (Go Annie!)

A woman arrived after lunch to adopt Junior and Lucy. She has been stalking our Adoption Page so that she could get a red headed kitten for her two red headed girls. She bought lots of stuff and they will be happy, much loved kittens.

Speaking of which: Libby was adopted over the weekend. Her new owner emailed to say that she has chosen her favourite placeto sit: a small table by a window and she certainly looked comfortable on an embroidered, white tablecloth. Both are very happy.

Klaus is in boarding. He was our May cat on FB. He has the most unusual long, brown hair on his chest. I found a brush for him which he loves.

Sorry to be late

 When I arrived there seemed to be all the kittens running around the Main room floor . . . aided and abetted by vollies and a small boy. They had a lovely time because Maggie's kittens have been moved out of the play place into one stand alone and a condo and they have a serious playtime mojo!

Eventually they got put back and other cats were allowed out for Robyn to take photos of. She is helping to write up profiles of the cats for the Safe website. In the quiet time before she arrived, I opened Jane (Juliette)'s door. She ventured out much further than before. Doesn't look like the weight management crunchies work too well if you don't get any exercise.

Jagger had popped into her condo earlier and she wasn't pleased. And it doesn't look like Devo was impressed by him either. They both need a name change perhaps.

Audrey (from the same foster home as Junior and Lucy) is bold and loves to play.

But her condo mates would rather stay in. Robyn forced them out by giving their condo a good, overdue, scrub. Soon as she was done, Sidney and Sophia moved back into their black bin.

How did that happen?

 The two littlest kittens who haven't been posted for adoption have a "We have been adopted" sign. They are growing like weeds so perhaps it is for the best. They might not look cute in a couple of weeks but their tails should be nice and fluffy.

I went to take a photo today and my camera told me that its battery was flat. Never gives me any warning. It must be a catmera. Cats don't give you much warning either. Good thing Joy takes photos on her phone.

Roger whose nose looks cleaner today than last Wednesday.

We had the right number of vollies today: 7 and everything went smoothly because Catsie came and did ALL the washing up. What a hero. She even cleaned the cupboard under the sink.

During the afternoon we had visitors bearing gifts. One came with an armful of towels and got a walk around while everybody was out playing.

The next one came to pick up a pair of paintings that she had won at our auction. She has 3 cats at home (after going out to get just one) so was happy just to take home two paintings of cats.

The first one brought two bags of wet food because her cat had dietary problems and instead of buying one tin of food to try out on him, she buys boxes of food. So we are looking very well stocked on wet food.

And a vollie visited the kittens out back. Just because they are gorgeous.

A new Leon

 A new Leon has taken over Ginger George's stand alone. He is 14 years old and deaf. (Most deaf cats are white but he is a tabby.) He is a bit shell shocked at being surrendered.

The old Leon is up for adoption. I offered him the Top Cat this afternoon but he was not going to move from the hand knitted rug that vollie Paris supplied. She made sure that all the condos with cats for adoption were sparkling clean with lots of toys. . . to make a good impression.

Another vollie made a good impression on me. I am not the only slightly OCD person around. This photo pleases me.

 Below Aslan are a delightful couple of cats: Queenie and Devo. Pity about the names.

Seven kittens were passed on to us from a lovely lady who rescues little kittens from colonies and brings them up with love. They are all delightful and will be snapped up by some lucky adopters.

Lucy and Junior are both girls even though Junior is all ginger.

There is Trixie and Roxy. When I first met them I thought we had lost one. But she appeared from under the blanket. They are all due to be desexed soon and then the bun rush will be on.

Adoption Tails: Cheena and Bubbles, Dibbles, Eric and Lucy

Cheena and Bubbles 

1 day: They’re settling in very well. They’ve both been coming out of their hidey hole to explore their safe room, play and eat/drink. They’ve definitely stepped into the litter tray but haven’t used it yet. 

Cheena and Bubbles 1 week

 1 week: They’ve been renamed Vera and Olive. They were interested in exploring the house a few days ago, but they were getting really scared if their owners would move or walk past them. They’re going to keep them in their safe room until they’re less scared of their owners. They seem to be gradually getting less scared. They stretch out in their beds when their owners are in the room with them, purring and sniffing the food they gave them. They’re still eating well and are using the litter and their owner thinks they’re feeling safer by the day. They’re warming up to the house but are still wary of their owners. In the evening, Vera (formerly Cheena) let them feed her treats and she nuzzled her head into their partner’s hand. Both cats ate in front of them which they hadn’t done before. 

Vera, 1 week

 1 month: They’ve seen a lot of changes. They’re both doing very well and seem much more comfortable around their owners. They tend to watch them warily when their owners walk around, but both come close when they’re sitting and relaxing. They’ve slowly moved the litter box to the bathroom and they haven’t had any issues. Olive is still wary when her owners are nearby, but she’s slowly getting braver. She doesn’t really like to be touched, but she starts relaxing and purring after a few gentle strokes. They’ve been exploring every room for a few weeks. They even snuck into the bedroom closet and started bumping around when their owners were asleep. They both seem really happy, and they’re very playful with each other at night and when their owners are around.

Dibbles

The follow ups weren't put into the tasks so we didn't do the normal 1 day and 1 week follow ups

Dibbles, 2 months

2 weeks: He is definitely settling in well. He loves exploring and climbing and is getting more courage to explore outside his safe room. They’re keeping his name.

1 month: He is out and exploring. He went to the vet for some antibiotics and antiseptic treatment but his behaviour was unaffected.

2 months: Dibbles is fully settled in at home.

1 day: Eric is lovely. So friendly! He’s using his litter tray, eating and drinking. They will keep his name. He is being kept separate from the resident cat and will be slowly introduced. “He’s the absolute best.”

1 week: Eric is doing very well. He has started to explore the apartment. They think he is settling in very nicely. “He is the best. We cuddle every night.”

1 month: Everything is going really well. “He is an absolute sweetheart”

Lucy

1 day: She is still hiding in the carrier during the day but ate all the food left in the bowl last night. She escaped from her safe area overnight and was quite stressed out from that. They are keeping her name. She left the carrier in the evening to sit in her new bed.

 2 days: Lucy went back to her carrier and has been staying there. She ate all of her dry food and used her litter box.

1 week: Her owners bought a playpen and think she’s adjusting well.
