Adoption Tail: Maggie

 Maggie

1 day:  She is settling in well in the bedroom. The owner will probably keep her name as Maggie. She has been eating/drinking and using the litter. Even climbs on top of the owner at night purring and wanting to leave the safe room already.

1 week:  She is settling in well. Seems quite comfy in the rest of the apartment.

1 month: Maggie is going well. She is very affectionate on her own terms and meows a lot when the owner gets home from work. "I wish I didn't have to leave her for so long each work day." She loves playing with the cat wand toy with the owner and loves racing around the apartment. She never uses the bed the owner bought her or the scratching post cat tree. Maggie likes to sleep at the end of the bed and to relax on the couch together. The owner tried applying Revolution Plus to her and only managed to get one drop on. Creamy treat was used to get Maggie to stay close but it didn't work. Eventually, she gave up after 10 minutes of chasing her around the apartment and Maggie getting increasingly irritated. There was a singular incident where Maggie inappropriately peed on the owner's bed and the owner has since added a second litter tray that is in the bathroom which Maggie seems to be happy about. 

1.5 months: Maggie used to barely touch her dry biscuits until the owner switched the bowl since it was likely too deep. She would happily eat from hands or now on a plate. Increasingly, she is finishing off all her biscuits and would not have anything overnight. She also loves her wet food! The owner is adjusting the amount of dry vs wet food so that she is more satiated with a larger volume of wet food since Maggie is such a foodie. They are also going to a mealtime schedule so that Maggie is not begging for food all the time and can learn to expect when to eat. 

2.5 months: Maggie has slowed down her eating and has been on a meal schedule. There was a few vet visits due to bloody stools but she is all okay now. She just celebrated her 3rd birthday!

Adoption Tails: Maggie and her litter

 Maggie

4 days: Maggie has been under the bed in the spare room for 4 days. She is eating well, using her litter tray, and comes out at night to have her treats. Her owner talks to her and has a 5 minute playtime with a fluffy toy on a stick but she doesn’t respond. Her owner won’t be changing her name - Maggie has gotten to know her owner when she’s volunteering at SAFE. “I love her so much.”

1.5 weeks: Maggie comes out of her hiding spot since the toys are always in a different place. Maggie also finds the treats her owner hides in her room. She likes the water fountain and is eating well but isn’t coming out yet. Her owner spends time trying to entice her out with feather toys. Maggie’s owner heard all sorts of strange noises in the bedroom last night and saw it was Maggie exploring. Her owner walked into their bedroom and Maggie was lying on the bed. She became anxious when she felt cornered between her owner and the door. She meowed very sweetly and ran back to her safe room. “She is such a sweetie”. Maggie’s safe room has places for her to hide in - they're soft and fluffy and have dangly toys. 

2 weeks: “Maggie is still under the bed. She came out yesterday when I took in her breakfast then looked at me gave a little meow and went back under the bed. I hate that she is so afraid.” Her owner was considering getting a little kitten to keep her company. “I even dream about her! I will be over the moon when she walks around and knows I will do anything for her.”

5 weeks: “I am delighted with her progress. She still likes to spend her day under the bed with various toys but explores and plays around the house at night. This morning I tried feeding her in the family room but she wasn’t comfortable there so went back to her usual spot. She lets me pat her, rub her ears and back and purrs so loudly. She is very talkative and constantly rubs against me. I haven’t tried picking her up for a cuddle. I think that is a long way off. She knows her name and is so sweet and loving. I adore her.”

Loki

1 day: He is settling in very well and is also very playful. He has been introduced to other rooms in the house because he constantly stood outside the door and he seems fine with it. He is eating and drinking well too. He had some problems with his litter box but is not using it.

1 week: Loki has been exploring his environment. He has moved out of his safe room and has started to explore the rest of the house. He is hesitant to snuggle with the family, but his owner thinks he needs more time for him to feel safe.

1 month: His owners are struggling to cut his nails. They are getting very long and he accidentally scratches our family members. His owners have tried to cut them but he doesn’t stay still and always runs away.

7 weeks: They put a harness on Loki and he’s constantly trying to take it off himself. “He is also just a tiny bit sad.” His owners want to get him used to the harness because they plan on taking him for walks. They’ve also made sure that the harness is loose so he can breathe. “He was just very curious and every time we opened the door to go outside, he always wanted to come with us and stood there meowing and watching.”

2.5 months: “Everything with Loki is going very well.”

Atlas now Casper

1 day: “Atlas seems to be settling in very well to the safe room from what we've seen! Surprisingly he's been very affectionate and meows a lot when we leave the room. He is eating and drinking but usually only in small amounts (around half the bowl of food and water is normal). He's only used the litter twice since being brought home and I'm not sure if that's normal though. He's been a bit sneezy but not today thankfully. We are planing on renaming him but we're still deciding on a name.”

1 week: Atlas has been renamed Casper. “We changed his litter to no dust a clumping anti crystal litter and he seems to be good with it. His mood has been a bit all over the place, sometimes he's super active and VERY attention seeking and at other time hes hiding under the bed. He can't have us away in another room without him else he meows/crys a lot (it's been so worrying I had to stay back a day from college, we're very tired).” His owner is very overprotective of him and just wants to make sure Casper is alright and they’re not doing anything wrong.

1.5 weeks: Casper has been having some flu symptoms. “He's suddenly become distant from us but wants our attention for something that's not pets, play, or food (very odd) even though his appetite is fine.”

2 weeks: “We've been observing him closely and I think Casper is fine now, his runny eyes and sneezing have greatly reduced. He's been exploring outside the room so much sometimes he sometimes doesn't want to go back at all! Although I do think he's still a bit frightened/stressed/bored at times. He's been running around the house a lot and being vocal and we still don't quite understand that he's after at times but overall I think he's ok.” He hasn’t been responsive to his new name and doesn’t play with any of the mental stimulation games they’ve given him. “He's becoming very curious about the outside”

1 month: no response

Roman 

 

1 day: He is doing great. He has started exploring new rooms today. They will be keeping his name.

1 week: Roman is doing very well and has settled down. He is very happy and playful yet very vocal, just like their previous cat Chimney. “Roman is a blessing of happiness in our house and we love him immensely”.

Zaria now Mochi

 

1 day: She's doing well. She is eating, has had water and a wee. The family is keeping a close eye on her. The daughter has decided to name her Mochi, after a tasty little Japanese dessert! The family thinks she's doing really well considering the change. She's been super affectionate and cuddly. Mochi has a safe space under the bed but is spending most of her time out and about in the room with the daughter or dad.

1 week: She's going really well! Eating, drinking and toileting.

1 month: Mochi is doing so well. The family absolutely loves her. She's a very brave explorer and has a lot of confidence. She's energetic and very healthy. "We are very pleased to have her!"

Astra now Delilah

1 day: She’s doing well. She is eating very well and has used her litter tray to pee and poo. “She is finding comfort in her room”. She and their resident cat, Teddy, have been talking to each other through the door. She has been renamed Delilah.

1 week: She’s doing really well and is full of energy. “She is loving the company of our dog and cat. She’s fitting in very nicely.”

 Not only was the Big Kahuna's cone off this afternoon. But the strap around his chest was gone too. He is out of the cone at last. And he is glad. I do wonder how long it will take his whiskers to loose their extra curl.

At the other end of the spectrum of good looks we have PC who desperately needs to go to a foster home.

And Finn, who has boarded with us before. His owner has taken up shaving him. And he is not happy.

Boarders are pouring in. We will overflow to Dr Kim's again this Christmas. And boarders owners are dropping off Xmas gifts along with their cats!

And the poo bag situation is not so dire. Although it is better to have 0 bags on the verandah on Friday afternoon. I could have managed it if Willoughby Council had delivered our second bin already.

The good news is that Maggie has been adopted by a vollie. She (the new owner) is not able to take Maggie home just yet so she is still with us. Maggie was happy to have Top Cat time this afternoon. (Her triangular hammock is in her bed box).

Tim is still not well so cats were moved around by Irene. Cassie and Berkshire have come in from their foster home. Irene reports that Cassie is a lap cat. Berkshire would like a family with children or other animals. They both love company. (I would pronounce "Berkshire" barkshire. And think it is a name more suited to a dog than a cat).

Kenji was also adopted yesterday. He was reclaimed by his fosterer. Chad has moved into his condo and doesn't like the change of scene so far.

And Rocky's sister was moved into the condo below Aslan where Jack and Luna were. Irene and I tried to choose the calmer sister to move. I gave her a fluffy bed after taking this photo.

Cindy and her four surviving kittens have gone home with an experienced foster mum who bought in some sweet kittens all ready for adoption. They are wiggly kittens so I will need a holder to get a good photo.

With all these kittens around, Lola has reverted to spending her afternoons in Opie's room. Some nice person put a towel on a shelf for her.

The cats in the Palace were fostered by Irene. She says that they are all lovely cats who love pats. They were more outgoing after she visited with them. They have got used to being with us.

 This morning half a dozen Chinese young women arrived with cameras, tripods and other equipment. They are learning how to make documentaries, I gather. One was the director. There were a pair of cameras that the others operated. The cats and us were the actors. Tim got interviewed. Jade brought in a "cat" to board and I did the paperwork. We even did a mock adoption of Arlo and Annie. Let's hope that it was a warm up for the real thing tomorrow!

Of course with all that excitement and the distribution of chicken, I didn't even think of taking any photos so will use Joy's from Wednesday.

Kittah and Tosca were surrendered from the same family. They are not in a condo together because they didn't really like each other at home even though their eyebrows look sisterly. They both had dental work yesterday and are on soft food for a while. They got chicken juice.

I put up the Top Cat for Maggie. I think it was her first opportunity and she had a lovely time. She even relaxed in the hammock. Billy is having the overnight go. 

Jagger is in the play place. He hid in a box most of the day. When it came to chicken time I wheeled in his stand alone. But he was too canny to jump in while I was close by. So he is still there. 

It doesn't matter because the space where his stand alone was, by the filing cabinet, has another empty stand alone there. It was moved from Isolation because new condos have arrived (thank you, Geoff) from Mona Vale vets who don't use them any more. They will be set up in Isolation and the Royal Cannin monster will be dismantled and discarded. Hurrah! It was originally built as a temporary display place for cats at shows. It is very hard to clean properly. And we will get more wire enclosures to take the place of the small AWL condos which will move into Incoming.

 There are only 2 cats left on Better Row: Ella and Hugo. Katie wanted to move Hugo to Jagger's condo. No, Jagger hasn't been adopted. He is in the stand alone by the filing cabinet and Maggie's 4 are in the play place. He is not too happy about it. But Maggie's lot are.

I moved Hana. It wasn't hard. And when she was moved she took up her usual position on the top shelf in her hairy bed watching. (Thank you to the vollie who dehaired the bed. It is probably just as hairy by now).

The entire bottom row is occupied by pairs of cats. Charlie and Champ are a loving pair.

Blossom's black and white boys are heavy enough to be desexed. Her tabby girls are still tiny.

And Timi is doing well. She and her sister's eyes didn't develop well due to their mum having herpes while they were in utero. Her sister had two very swollen eye balls and didn't survive the operation/anesthetic. Timi has one good eye and really enjoyed her first taste of chicken this afternoon. She proceeded to tip her water bowl into her litter tray and got wet in the process!

 Today we moved Julie and Bassuria to the Welfare section. That was because Sidney was moved to Holly's stand alone next to Sydney. Because Holly was adopted over the weekend as were Sidney's two condo mates (Audrey and Sylvie, together).

Bassuria was no problem to move. He walked into the carrier as soon as we put some of Sue's chicken in there. It took some time for Gulia (vollie) to entice Julie (cat) into the carrier which she usually scurries into as soon as you look at her. But the deed was done and they are now below Joni.

So that only leaves Ella, Hugo, Mia and Hana on Better Row. I might have to change the name to Short Row.

Hugo who won't last long

The woman who adopted one of Maggies kittens brought him/her back because she couldn't deal with the mess a kitten makes. So Maggie's lot is back in the play place overnight or they go nuts in the stand alone. After breakfast this morning they got a big spurt of energy and raced around the play place like demons. The R girls in the Palace were parallel playing with them, bouncing from one side of their condo to the other. The R girls gave up first.

Another cat, Puma was returned over the weekend because the family situation has changed. The vollie who was there when he was returned immediately adopted him. She loved him when we had him over a year ago. But her mum wasn't keen on having a cat. On Saturday morning, she had finally given in and said she could have a cat. And up turned Puma, the love of our vollie's life. She came in this afternoon to smooch with him. He was perfectly happy to get all the love.

No play time

 Nobody is allowed out to play until the sneezing stops. And the boarders are being cared for very carefully. The last thing anybody wants is a sniffle caught at the cattery. Phantom came in to board for the first time today. He is now called Sprout and is dearly loved. He spends his time sleeping on her bed or in an avocado-shaped cat couch. He likes to play with Q-tips so she included several along with his special food.

Joni has been moved to where Lyra was (which was Phantom's old condo). She seems fine and enjoyed her chicken. If she is, it may demonstrate that flu viruses fall downwards because Kat has it and Thelma and Louise have it and they were all below her.

Arlo looked miserable. He is just opposite the Maggie kitten source of the sneezes who have moved back into the main cattery. But his misery was because Annie was off being desexed so he didn't have anybody nice and soft to lie on!

The single cat in Isolation is Sparkle. He is there because there is no room elsewhere. I suggested that his name be changed to Sparky which is more masculine sounding than Sparkle!

Ahchoo, choo, choo

 The flu train has come to Safe. When I arrived this morning to do the early feed, Maggies boys in the stand alone by the filing cabinet were sneezing in chorus. I wheeled them into isolation. Before I left, with Tim's agreement, I folded down Adele's crate and moved them against the wall. There is a new cat in the opposite stand alone but I don't know her story. Blossom and her kittens seem to be recovering from their flu and have finished their meds.

Lola joined me in the foyer from Opie's room where she spent the night. Good thing to be out of sneezing range. She hopped back into her stand alone enticed by a pot of grass.

Sidney and his condo mates are sneezing. The R kittens in the Palace are sneezing. Kat is sneezing, Thelma and Louise are sneezing. Good thing everybody has been vaccinated.

Sydney was adopted by a woman who checked with her flat's agent if it would be OK to have a cat. He said it would be fine. She already has a dog. But the owner said that she couldn't have a cat. So Sydney came back. In the meantime Ainsley, who has fostered Sydney for the past ?9 months, took Shadow home in the hopes of getting rid of his skin condition. This morning when I left early to take DH to the eye doc, Ainsley was cuddling with Sydney so that the vollie could clean around her. Sydney never has liked strangers.

Short time

 I was supposed to drive my husband to his eye doc this morning so only went to Safe to give everybody their breakfast. His doc called in sick and he didn't go after all but will go next week (perhaps).

Several adoptions over the weekend. Opie went home with Ark and his stand alone is occupied by Holly who used to be in Incoming above Tiger who she came in with. She settled down in Incoming very well and sought pats after a couple of weeks. But she doesn't like change and is hiding in a box on the floor of the stand alone behind a sheet.

Donatella and McQueen were adopted! He looks like he had some inkling in this photo that I took on Friday. Donatella will hide for a month! Billy is in their stand alone by the front door.

Maggie's kittens were STARVING, of course. Five minutes after bolting their breakfast they started to bounce off the walls of the play place. The R kittens in the Palace were mesmerized. I was still handing out breakfasts at the time and by the time I found my camera they had all settled down.

 Robyn reported later today the Billy was adopted this afternoon as well!

M' Mayhem

 Maggie's kittens were moved to the play place this afternoon. They had a fabulous time throwing themselves at speed from the top of the scratchy pole to the bottom of the multilevel hanging thing which they scrambled up on the outside. Then back down and around again. They did eventually wear themselves out.

Mariko who was a volunteer last year and who offered to foster Rebel has adopted him as well as Melody! Isn't she amazing! And she rescues mice from a breeder!

Molly has a sign that says that she is "Adopted Maybe" and will be picked up on Tuesday. Of course, there was a call from a lady who fancies her from the website. I said that she should call back on Wednesday to see if the maybe is a maybe not.

The muralist has added some cushions to the hallway.

And somebody managed to make a hole in the wall. I think she is clever enough to paint a cat disappearing into the hole.
