Adoption Tails: Yumi, Cleo and Kat

Yumi

4 days: She’s very good and is slowly coming out of her shell. She has used the litter tray (but only goes when no one is looking. Such a lady), eats all of her food and is drinking water. She is no longer in her safe room and has moved herself into the living room comfortably. All by her own initiative. They are trialing the name Maeby (Mae for short) to see if she responds.

 10 days: Mae is doing great. “She's a bit of a stairs goblin. She likes playing on the stairs with all her toys. She's comfortable in every room of the house now. Her personality is showing a lot more, just not enough to be cuddly yet! She will on her own time.” She’s eating, drinking and using her litter box well. She’s never had any litter issues and knows where her bathroom is.

 1 month: “She is great! Still a little nervous but very at home! Eating well. Using the bathroom well. She isn't very cuddly, but hopefully will feel more comfortable with touch in the winter. It's been very hot lately so I don't blame her.”

 Cleo

1 day: She has settled in really well so far. She is eating, and drinking, and has used the litter tray a few times. She has found a safe haven under one of their small lounges and she likes it there. She comes out when they talk to her and explores her room. Her owner has picked her up several times today and she is loving it. She is also purring. “She is a beautiful healthy baby girl”. Thank you for allowing her to become our precious beautiful girl. “We just love her so much”. They will keep her name although they sometimes call her Chloe. She may end up as CC. All she wants to do is play with her new toys when it’s bedtime.

1 week: She wants to get past the screen door but her owner is a bit scared to let her roam the rest of the house. She is sitting at the back door, looking out the window. She has a couple of favourite spots. She plays with her toys, eats more, uses her litter and lets her owner pick her up. “She is going really well”. She comes to her owner when they call her.

 1 month: “Cleo is just so precious. She has fitted in so well. We just love her with so so much.”

5 days: Kat has been renamed Cleo. She settled in quickly. She’s confident and is always asking for pats. “She has claimed one of the chairs in my lounge room which is perfect!” She is great with her litter tray and is always asking for more food. They have an appointment with her vet in a week to touch base and get some more of her medication.

2 weeks: “Cleo seems to be getting more and more comfortable each day”. She met her new vet and got more of her medication.

1 month: Cleo is settling in so well. Her owner’s housemate is also loving having Cleo in their home. “She is an absolutely beautiful girl, and we are seeing more and more of her personality each day”

Adoption drought broken!

 Eight cats were adopted over the weekend: Astra and Zaria, Arlo and Annie, Roman, Sparky, Trixie and Mabel. And one was adopted today from foster by the fosterer before it even was posted. And Kat has been posted as available so with any luck, she will go tomorrow!

Or course, there has been lots of rearrangement because of this. Mia and Hugo are the only cats out on Better Row. She demonstrated how much better it is there by staying in her condo even though the door was wide open for at least half an hour!

Ted has moved to Arlo and Annie's stand alone.

Isolation has "new" condos donated to us from Mona Vale Vet. They have a distressing tendency to stain when poo'd on and the doors are a bit tricky to close. But Gracie and her kittens have the run of the upper layer of the one that has been put together. 

The bottom layer is marked for Sabrina and her kittens and across the way is another set to be installed for Elsa and her lot. We might have to rename this room the Nursery. Elsa and her kittens are on medication and have to be separated into a cat carrier to eat their dose. Only two of the six ate voluntarily. Sue and I had to spoon feed the others. Made me feel as though I was force feeding suffragettes.

And the three boys were happy when I installed a hammock big enough for all three of them. They spent the night in the play place because they couldn't be enticed back into their stand alone. They did it for dinner tonight.

Just a reminder not to leave rolls of paper towel on top of stand alones.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. The mop died. It fell into two pieces. It is an ex-mop.

Time for somebody to go to Bunnings to buy a new one.

Short orders

 Again I had to take DH to the eye doc today so was only at Safe long enough to feed everybody their breakfast. When I got home at 10:30am to pick up DH to take him, my Cody posed under the poppies.

He was still there when we got home after 3pm! Cats do spend 22 hours a day sleeping, just like ants. But they sleep very lightly so need the extra hours.

I was surprised when the first new vollies arrived shortly after 9am Evidently 9am to 1pm are the new vollie hours. Traffic will make them arrive like Brown's cows.

Loki (Maggie's all black) was adopted over the weekend. The woman who came to line up Astro on Friday brought her 2 daughters in on Sunday. One girl immediately had an allergic reaction to our cats so they went home empty handed despite all the preparation the Mum had done. We know a lovely dog that they can adopt!

Belle went home with her vollie. Kat has moved into her condo. It is smaller than her previous condo and won't offer her the same variety of beds.  It was also pretty warm in there this morning.

Ahchoo, choo, choo

 The flu train has come to Safe. When I arrived this morning to do the early feed, Maggies boys in the stand alone by the filing cabinet were sneezing in chorus. I wheeled them into isolation. Before I left, with Tim's agreement, I folded down Adele's crate and moved them against the wall. There is a new cat in the opposite stand alone but I don't know her story. Blossom and her kittens seem to be recovering from their flu and have finished their meds.

Lola joined me in the foyer from Opie's room where she spent the night. Good thing to be out of sneezing range. She hopped back into her stand alone enticed by a pot of grass.

Sidney and his condo mates are sneezing. The R kittens in the Palace are sneezing. Kat is sneezing, Thelma and Louise are sneezing. Good thing everybody has been vaccinated.

Sydney was adopted by a woman who checked with her flat's agent if it would be OK to have a cat. He said it would be fine. She already has a dog. But the owner said that she couldn't have a cat. So Sydney came back. In the meantime Ainsley, who has fostered Sydney for the past ?9 months, took Shadow home in the hopes of getting rid of his skin condition. This morning when I left early to take DH to the eye doc, Ainsley was cuddling with Sydney so that the vollie could clean around her. Sydney never has liked strangers.

Going, going. . . . .

 Joy spent ages this afternoon trying to get a decent photograph of Hank to go with his profile on our Available for Adoption webpage. He was more interested in cuddles than posing. Mid afternoon a mum and her daughter arrived to look for a replacement cat for their beloved one whom they adopted from Peggy Brown's branch of AWL 14 years ago (when the daughter was 5). He had just died. I think they said his name was Oscar when they adopted him and I looked up the old blog. There were lots of Oscars at Peggy's. But the one that seemed to match their story was adopted by a family of three boys. But this is a family of 2 girls. Perhaps I got the name wrong . . . . or the story wrong 14 years ago!

Anyhow, I think it is a match made in heaven. They have a pair of suburban kelpies and spend time in a flat in Newport and on a farm. So Hank will have a devoted teenager, a pair of dogs that will know where he is all the time, and a life full of adventure, on a harness and leash. (I sold them one and explained how to train a human to walk a cat).

Then I sewed plastic pockets on the aprons so that vollies can insert their name tag and everybody will know who is whom. The name tags are in a box on the desk next to the Japanese cat. If your name isn't there, write it on the bit of paper there and I will write a tag for you. I will finish off the job on Friday. And will welcome feedback on how they work out.

Good news that Biscuit was adopted over the weekend. Lucky them. And Davo is where she used to be.

Robyn came to spend some time with the cats. Everybody was happy to see her.

 Today I discovered that it was our Arc who adopted Pearl. What a relief. I imagined that he was devastated that she had been snatched from him. She loved him best at Safe Haven. And from the photos loves him best at home too.

A woman came in today to do the paperwork to adopt Aster. She had been taken off the list because of the ringworm spot on her ear. But this woman and her daughter had seen her and fallen in love. They are convinced that she will fit right in with their 16 year old cat and doodle dog. And they are happy to wait until mid July to pick her up. She will be much bigger then than she is in this photo with her sibling River.

And a couple came in with Luna, aka Maisy whom one of them adopted 3 years ago from us. They are going to move in together and are uncertain whether their separate cats will get on well together. So Luna is getting time out with us while they sort out the move.

Kat has some bare patches under both ears. It is probably food sensitivity. Ringworms are not bilateral. She really wants her own person to love.
