I have decided to let Toby explore the house tonight because I will have time tomorrow morning to find him if he has hidden himself somewhere. The visitors are well gone and last night he came to sit under my foot stool while I spent time with him in his room.

A mother and daughter who visited last Friday returned and decided on Tyrone. But when I got the paperwork out, it says "Tim to approve adoption". They are happy to come back tomorrow for him to approve.

 And we have a new "breed" cat to replace Demi who has gone home to her owner. Kiwi's people rang this morning to ask how the cat was settling in!

Adoption Tails: Bonny, Ricky, Jessa, Belle

Bonny at Safe

1 week: Bonny has settled in really well with the owners, Jordan & Rachel at home. She has adjusted well to using her own litter tray and has been eating/drinking normally which is so great. She's found her own toys throughout the house and enjoys waking the owners up in the morning by launching herself onto the bed right onto their faces. It's been noted that Bonny has been sneezing quite often, getting a little bit lethargic sometimes through the day and developed a runny nose. The owners are not too concerned at the moment because she's still got her full appetite and is still a kitten so any kind of lethargy might just be her running up and down the apartment for hours when nobody's around. They are keeping a look out for things getting worse but is putting it down to a flare up of cat flu from all the recent changes.

No 1 month response

Ricky, now Baldur

 

1 day: Ricky's name is now Baldur, after the Norse god. The owners' corgi is called Freya. Baldur is okay, he has yet to leave his carrier since coming home. He has started to eat this morning, only if the bowl is in the carrier. The owner is concerned about him not drinking any water and is thinking of putting some water into his next meal. The owners have been taking turns sitting in the bathroom, watching something with headphones to spend some quiet time with Baldur and get him used to their presence and smells. They've put in 2 blanketed carboard boxes for him in there for when he is out of the carrier. Freya is being kept away from the bathroom with the doggy gate set up to keep her in the lounge area.

 1 week: Baldur is going great, he is very comfortable in the new space, he loves jumping up and hanging out in the owner's egg chair. Freya the corgi is coping just fine, she does get spooked when Baldur jumps up onto his cat tree. They are tolerating each other too, the owners had them in the lounge room together split by a fence but Baldur kept jumping the fence so it was removed and the two are doing fine. He is a very curious and adventurous kitty, definitely a lover of jumping and climbing.

 1 month: The owners are currently getting ready to move so Baldur is enjoying all the jungle gym of boxes everywhere and now empty shelves to sniff and explore. He's doing great, adventurous as ever, extremely talkative in the morning as he wants breakfast immediately. He loves looking out the window in his hammock during the day. At night, Freya and Baldur cuddle in front of the heater which is very cute. He also loves to hang in the owner's egg chair.

1 day: Jessa is settling in quite well in her safe room. She is still very shy and likes to hide in tight, small cubbies somewhere on the ground. She is quite scared at the moment but still appreciates a good stroke or pet on the ears or head with some occasional purring. She is eating and drinking well and using the litterbox which is great to know that she feels comfortable enough to do that. The owners are renaming her to Nesta.

1 week: Despite Nesta's missing fur on her tail, she is thriving and enjoying her new digs! She's such a joy and a cheeky character.

 1 month: Nesta has definitely grown, feels heavier and bright-eyed. Very cheeky! Seems like she's quite treat-oriented, just like her new hound-brother. They seem to have adapted to each other well!

Belle, now Turbo

Turbo's owner previously adopted Oliver from the kitten litter. 

1 day: She is settling really well. She is such a tiny sweetheart. She's eating and using her litter and exploring her room. The owners have been feeding Oliver on the other side of the door and his litter is also near there (moved away during feeding time) so hopefully they are smelling each other well enough. She seems to be grooming her desexing scar quite a bit and it looks a little lumpy but she doesn't seem bothered by it.

1 week: She is really good, the owners are still not sure of the perfect name for her. She and Oliver are getting on well but are kept apart when nobody is home to keep an eye on them. The two of them were all snuggled up for sleepy time the other day. She's been exploring the flat like a little adventurer!

 1 month: The family absolutely adores her and have decided to change her name to Turbo. She zooms about and is so curious. The lumpy desex scar has gone away fully and her fur is coming back nicely. The sons are keen to throw Turbo her birthday party once she turns one. She and Oliver are great friends and often snuggle up for sleeps on the bed through the day.

 

 

Adoption Tails: Lucy and Junior, Alice and Belle

 Lucy & Junior, now Pepper & Ginger

1 day: They're doing great. Lucy, who the owners are now calling Pepper, is so affectionate and Junior, now Ginger, is pretty shy but has come out of the cat cage for food and water. They've both used the litter tray. They are both so sweet and the girls were up at 6am this morning, playing with Pepper. The owner even introduced Pepper to her team over a work Teams call as she was sitting on her lap. Ginger is taking a little longer and definitely prefers it when it's not so noisy (with the kids).

 1 week: They're both just gorgeous. Ginger is slowly getting used to the family and sits with them in the evenings now. Pepper is so cuddly. Naomi (one of SAFE's day managers) will visit the family soon.

1 month: They're both doing so well. The family loves them. Ginger has totally come out of her shell and loves being picked up and having cuddles. Pepper loves all the attention and wakes everybody up first thing in the morning for breakfast. Pepper and Ginger like to sit outside on the verandah which is enclosed with pool gates so they can't get out. They get some outside time but they're not allowed out into the bush. "They're a fantastic addition to the family and we are all smitten."

Alice & Belle, now Astrid & Ishka

Alice and Belle's mum is Cleo, whose follow up was an Adoption Tail on Jan 3, 24. 

1 day: Astrid and Ishka are hiding in the big box the owner has put in their room (as the owner expected). There has been 1 poo and a little bit of food has been eaten but not much. The owner expected a big regression. She is giving them the room to themselves and only going in the morning, before bed and once during the day. Hopeful that they pick up regarding food by tomorrow and that she can spend some more time in the room after the weekend.

1 week: They are going well, eating with gusto! The two have yet to explore and spend a lot of time in the wardrobe, especially Ishka but they do play and cuddle with the owner too. The resident boy cat is doing his best to ignore the fact that the room Astrid and Ishka are in exists. He makes sure to tell the owner off when she comes out of there! She thinks the two will be in the room for at least another week before she tries and moves to the next stage of introduction. They are bonding really nicely and she is already in love with them. She thinks they quite like her too!

1 month: Ishka is super confident now and is so affectionate! Astrid is lagging a little bit and unfortunately has peed on the owner's couches, bed, hall and bathroom floor. She is also using the litterbox properly and eating well so quite clearly a stress reaction though the owner is unsure what is stressful. The owner has since closed off the bedroom and loungeroom to give her less space and hopefully help her feel more in control. Jupiter (resident cat) is being really good with them, hanging out in the same room as them and licking both on the head at least once a day. The owner is really happy with how they are all going, individually and together. She is hopeful that Astrid will continue to improve and the peeing will stop, if not she will take Astrid to the vet for a check.

Short orders

 Again I had to take DH to the eye doc today so was only at Safe long enough to feed everybody their breakfast. When I got home at 10:30am to pick up DH to take him, my Cody posed under the poppies.

He was still there when we got home after 3pm! Cats do spend 22 hours a day sleeping, just like ants. But they sleep very lightly so need the extra hours.

I was surprised when the first new vollies arrived shortly after 9am Evidently 9am to 1pm are the new vollie hours. Traffic will make them arrive like Brown's cows.

Loki (Maggie's all black) was adopted over the weekend. The woman who came to line up Astro on Friday brought her 2 daughters in on Sunday. One girl immediately had an allergic reaction to our cats so they went home empty handed despite all the preparation the Mum had done. We know a lovely dog that they can adopt!

Belle went home with her vollie. Kat has moved into her condo. It is smaller than her previous condo and won't offer her the same variety of beds.  It was also pretty warm in there this morning.

Still tidy

 The laundry shelves. I added to the stacks in a colour coordinated manner and went to get my camera to take a photo. On the way I noticed all the torties having their time out:

And I forgot to take a photo of the laundry shelves. And then got too busy to take any other photos.

Cookie was adopted late this afternoon. Her test came back negative so her person is happy. Her sisters are in the Lucky condo and are quite shy. Virgo has moved to were Maeve was. And Chia has moved to under Belle. (Shadow looks moth eaten around his rear). And two pairs of cats from Better Row have moved into their double condos below Libby.

Maggie and her crew may have ringworm but they are full of beans. They manage to squeeze out of the Royal Cannin standalone in the narrowest of door opening spaces. They can get through a gap that I can't get my hand through. Adele's lot are angels by comparison.

Told you it was a messy afternoon. I forgot to confirm that Robyn took Belle home. I have added that to the previous blog. After a noisy trip home by car with Belle yowling or Robyn singing the same song for 20 minutes to quiet her, Belle explored

and lots of cuddles and now feels right at home. But while the rest was happening on Friday afternoon, a pair of Japanese ladies arrived to foster Ebony. I know that they are Japanese because one was wearing a black sweatshirt with very specific geologic coordinates printed on it. She didn't know what it referred to. I asked her to turn around expecting a photo of Mt Fuji on the back, but there was nothing. We were travelling up in the lift at that time after I helped the dad of Jayde and Jasmin (and Rosy Nose's two kittens who came to be microchipped and vaccinated) take down the humumgous cat scratchy and to fit it into his car. It fitted. He drove off. Those two tiny kittens will be Olympic athletes if they can get to the top of that scratchy! And Ebony went home with the Japanese ladies. She got her Friday chicken treat before she left.

Neat morning, messy afternoon

When I arrived at noon there was a family with two small children after a kitten. They chose Kimmy (and vice versa). Then the woman and her daughter who wanted Kimmy on Sunday came in after getting permission from her landlord to have a cat. While Irene was checking out Kimmy, they decided that Chilli really was the better choice for them. They are Spanish speakers and will change his name to something unpronouncable. She has had cats forever so knows what to do. While I checked out Chilli, Irene introduced a woman to all the quiet cats in residence. She had a problem choosing between Soxy and Marmalade. And finally chose . . . . . MARMALADE!

She paid her money and went away without him but promised to be back. She came back at 3:30 having set up her house with everything that he will need . . . . lots of hiding places initially. But we think that they will be a good match. They are both quiet, aloof, self contained folk just aching for somebody to love. And then Robyn came in and talked to Tim about Belle's condition and dietary needs. While she was doing this (and Irene was processing Marmalade) I introduced a woman and her two teenaged sons who really had wanted Kimmy, or a Kimmy-like semi-long haired kitten. I introduced her to the longish haired ones in Incoming. We think that Petite and Norma are the longer haired girls. And then to the delicately grey Lucy and the longer haired of her brothers in Mia and Bella's stand alone. I suspect that the boys will go for Lucy because she will be ready earlier. They are desexed. They just need a vet check and microchip whereas the ones in Incoming need to be there for another week and then go through the vet check, etc. Those boys need a kitten while they are in lockdown to replace the much beloved cat who died last year. They want a longish haired cat because their old cat was. But they don't want a matted cat. I tried to convince them that if they start brushing the kitten while it is young, the cat will enjoy being brushed all its life. I suppose this is true.

They certainly like to cuddle up together. Robyn and I processed Belle and she went home with Robyn. I thought it was warm at Safe Haven today but the cats didn't. Ginger and Lechusa shared a box.

Now that we have spare condos, we have assigned separate condos for Bobby and Doel. While they came as a bonded pair, they have been quarrelling all day. They have gingivitis so are on TD's. A better solution is daily brushing, of their teeth. What's the chance of that while they are cross with each other?

Begone the other Coco

We got our Covid tests on Thursday morning and by Friday morning our results came back negative. But at Safe today, everybody wore masks. Including Joy's friend Barbara who came to choose a cat. Irene and I twisted her arm and she chose Coco who has just become available over Miyuki who tolerated being held by me but skedaddled to her upper shelf when Barb tried to take over and Peggy who was prepared to be patted by Irene but gave Barbara THE KEEP AWAY LOOK. (Peggy is available now too). It was a no brainer and they will live happily every after. We will get regular updates from Joy and in the meantime Coco (of C & Mason) is happy to be the only Coco at last.

Sandy reports that Ashleigh finds all the narrowest, darkest places to hide in her room. She will take a long time to realise how lucky she is now. Belle is looking much better. She is almost plump. I gave her a tiny bit of chicken this afternoon because she usually misses out. Let's see if it upsets her tummy.

And Apricot is getting friendlier. After her bit of chicken I picked her up and felt stitches. It is ages since she was desexed. So Tim removed them and let's hope that she cleans up the scar which looked a bit scabby. Chilli and Murphy had a great play in the play place followed by Sabrina's two. We decided that she would be happier to have their condo all to herself. She actually enjoyed getting ALL THE CHICKEN.

Incoming welcome

Now that we do not have any sick cats who need to be isolated, the outer office has an "Incoming" area. With occupants who must have come in last night after I talked to Tim at 4:45 pm. They are Whisky and Socksie (who should have been named Scotchie with a brother named Whiskey!) They take their job of welcoming seriously.

There were 81 cats in house despite the number adopted over the weekend. I had plenty of volunteers to fill in the gaps of Rod having to leave early to get his jab, and Katey arriving late because she has been worked hard housesitting dogs. But Catsie dropped by to help so everybody was happy. The Hungergames kittens (formerly the Gooey eyed kittens) are in the play place because all bar two of Silky's kittens are left and one of them, Sage has been adopted and will be picked up on the weekend. The Hungergames kittens are great purrers so should be snapped up quickly. A couple inspected each available cat/kitten this afternoon to choose a companion for their 2yr old girl cat and he liked Dale (Hungergame boy) but she liked the grey Japanese. So they went away to think about it.

Another couple came to get a little kitten. Any little kitten. The littler the better. The grey and white fluffy Japanese kitten appealed to her but he perhaps wanted something smaller. They may come back later. I did not show them Honey's kittens who are deliciously little. Barb Webster, who visited later, would have taken them home except that she knows how much work tiny kittens are.

Robyn had a lovely time with "her" litter. Button was not interested in eating today. But Belle is.

Just in case you wondered, Ashleigh is still with us. She looked perfectly relaxed on top of her carry cage this afternoon until I put the camera against her perspex to get a good photo. Too close, Prue.

And Mia and Bella still love each other despite the fact that they really need to be adopted. They would love each other much more if they had a little more space.

Ginger Express

There was a superfluity of day managers this afternoon: Tim, Irene, Katy and me. I busied myself filling the laundry shelves. They are full. I might have to relocate the feeding puzzles on the bottom shelf under the handtowels. . . . next week. Belle's kittens are no longer in quarantine. They are back where they were, above Ashleigh. While I fed Ashleigh some chicken, they tried to pat my hair with their paws. The idea is to get Ashleigh comfortable enough to take the food from my fingers, so I have to lean in to the back of her sleeping shelf because she backs herself into a corner. Which puts my head at the perfect patting place for Belle's kittens. They don't need to be enticed to be patted. Since Wednesday Skylar and Scooter have been adopted (the littlest kittens). We cleaned their condo and moved the Japanese family in there. They, being grey, will probably go over the weekend. Mimi won't have noisy downstairs neighbours for long.

Then I cleaned the quarantine condos, again. I really will put my headlamp into my glovebox for next time. Finished that job, I started to hand out chicken. Daisy wouldn't eat it. Mako wanted cuddles before chicken. Romeo ate it out of the bowl. I still haven't seen Juliet (or is it vice versa). I got around the corner and had a lovely head scrunching with Silky (!) and a stand off with Ebony (as usual) when Tim declared that he was off to collect cats. I'll go, says I. You have more important stuff to do. I picked up Magnus who has had his eyelid stitches removed.

He made a few comments on the way home. And Caesar who had three teeth removed including a canine. He will be on soft food for a few days. While I was gone, Daisy got adopted by the perfect woman for her. They will snuggle and love each other forever. Katy did the adoption. Daisy and her new owner are both camera shy.

Quarantine rearranged

The condos from in front of the desk have been moved into the "front office" to be quarantine accomodation. The stand alones/wheely cages have been moved to their space. I understand that we will get more shelving for the For Sale carriers.

Marigold, Gracie and Bridie have been moved with their condos into quarantine even though they are not in quarantine. . . . confused? I cleaned the condos that had been occupied by Candy and Collette, Daphne (who was adopted by the person who came to met Sprinkles but fell for her instead) and Apricot. Next time I will bring my head torch with me to see the grubby bits clearly. It was a good thing that I cleaned them because Buttons, the smallest of Belle's kittens failed her desexing today. She has flu. Because they have all been in the same condo (above Ashleigh, out back) Terry and I decided that they should all go into quarantine to see who sneezes or not. Honey's kittens are getting more adventurous. One of them kept going downstairs, finding him/herself all alone and screamed. (I bet he is a boy).

Eventually I got sick of the scraming and moved the carry cage and sibling downstairs and Honey followed. She can jump up to her litter tray from some peace and quiet. Another scream came from Coco and Mason's Palace. Mason said "It wasn't me. It was him" But the tuft of brown hair dangling from the side of his mouth tells another story.
