It was the usual busy Friday trying to get everything ready for lots of kitten adoptions over the weekend. There was a delivery of large litter trays for sale. Each litter tray comes wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in its own box. It took 3 vollies ages to unpack them all and stow them away. Thanks to you all. I brought the flattened boxes home for recycling but left the metres and metres of bubblewrap in the store room. Please take some home.

Another mum plus kittens arrived.

On Thursday, the naughty row was brought back from next door. The nurse there said today how nicely cleaned their condos were. We can come and stay whenever we like according to her! Remi seemed happy to be home. Lucky is out of the corner so should be more engaged. Taylor is in the top row which she seems to like. Casper is in the main cat room and is sulking mightily.

Adoption tails: Happy New Year

Fawny was adopted on Dec 1, 21

Fawny needed a home

There was no follow up until 18/12:  When his owner said that he was doing just fine.
At 1 month: He gets on well with the family. They have bought him many toys and that he is a lucky cat. He has a tall scratching post which he uses, he rolls around on his back, relaxes on the back of the couch and interacts with the family.

Puss and Scrat were adopted on Nov 24, 21
1 day: Scrat and Puss are doing great, eating and pooping like normal and very affectionate. They've been exploring and seem quite relaxed! The first night Scrat was wailing a little but nothing since then.

Puss above, Scrat below

1 month: We heard nothing until 1 month when the owners just sent photos no words. They both look really at home, relaxed & happy.

Schnitty 693 Adopted on Nov 26, 21
1 day: Schnitty is going well, eating and drinking. He has his own room as is very, very cuddly.
1 week: Beautiful photos have been sent.

Schnitty

2 weeks: Schnitty sneezes every now and then. His owner says she was advised that he is clear of cat flu. We told her that every rescue cat has most likely been exposed of cat flu but that a few sneezes here and there are nothing to worry about.
1 month: Schnitty only has discharge and sneezes every now and then. In the photo sent Schnitty looks comfy.

It would be nice to see the after photos.

Adoption Tails: Quick turnarounds

 Garfield, adopted Nov 11, 2021

Garfield was a kitten found on street by a Good Samaritan. He came to SH on Oct 3.

Grafield/Mr Darcy

3 days: Garfield now called Mr Darcy is doing great. He hid under the bed for the first day as expected but was eating and toileting fine. He is now very keen to explore the house but always comes back to his favourite pillow. Sometimes he is still skittish with the rest of the family, but he is happy to get belly rubs from his adopter. He has become very playful and is very loved already.
1 week: Mr Darcy is still doing great. He is more confident and loves to do a little trill when he greets his adopter.

Mr Darcy/Garfield

1 month: Mr Darcy is doing really well. His personality has come out & he is very chatty. He loves everybody. They may get him a companion down the track... but not yet…

Schnitty, adopted Nov 16, 2021

Surrendered to SH Aug 29 with a sore eye. Eventually we realised that his eyelid was turning in and his eyelashes were scratching his eye. That was operated on and he recovered well.
1 day: Schnitty is going well, eating and drinking. He has his own room as is very, very cuddly.
1 week: Ower says all good. Beautiful photos have been sent.

Schnitty at home

4 weeks:  Schnity is sneezing every now and then. Janice says she was advised that he is clear of cat flu. She was told that every rescue cat has most likely been exposed of cat flu but that a few sneezes here and there are nothing to worry about.

Cherry 823, adopted Nov 14, 2021

Came from Good Samaritan on Oct 31. As a beautiful grey tortie we didn't expect her to last long. She was adopted twice in the two weeks she was with us and the second one stuck.

Cherry

1 day: Cherry is doing really well. She is being kept in one section of the house whilst settling in, but she is already interested in exploring. She has found herself some hiding spots and is eating really well. She has not been introduced to the dog yet as they want her to be comfortable first. Our fact sheet to help with the introduction was recommended.
1 week: Cherry has now explored the whole house and roams up and down. She has also met the family dog and they are generally fine with one another. She is a good eater.
1 month: Cherry is doing great. She has completely settled in.

The next day

I went back to Bilgola Plateau and processed the adoptions of Sunny, Stormy and Sky. They are much loved kittens. Sky, the only boy, is the boldest, Sky is the sweetest, Stormy is the most agile (for example, in an attempt to keep them out of the kids' bedrooms they installed a sheet of cardboard at the top of a short flight of stairs that has clear perspex instead of railings (like modern swimming pools). Stormy can jump up to the top of the cardboard sheet (at least a meter) from the top step and then walk along the edge of the cardboard to get to where she can jump down into where she shouldn't be.

Stormy

Sky or Sunny: only difference is a spot of orange on her head

Today when I arrived Tim was introducing a couple to Schnitty. I took over when one of them wanted to meet Fawny. They need a cat to replace their rescue cat who recently died because their small, 9 year old dog needs a cat companion as much as they do. That is why Schnitty was first choice as he is used to dogs. But one partner spotted Fawny who was in the process of being added to the web page because he is the same colour as their previous cat plus their dog. Reason prevailed and Schnitty was chosen. They bought lots of stuff to go with him because they wanted to support us.

To compensate poor rejected Fawny, I fogged the play place and put him there. He had a marvelous time, alternatively hiding, playing peek-a-boo with Mayka and racing around like a lunatic. By tomorrow he may be calm enough for somebody to choose him.

Manic mood Fawny
The mystery of Dusty and her kittens name kidnap is that the person who found them in their back shed now wants to adopt them all. She gets naming rights and has given them Indian names. So Ashleigh and Edie were left-over names. Then another couple of kittens arrived and were given those names. Ashleigh is on meds and is very shy. Edie is the purrer.

Edie up front, Ashleigh hiding

We have boarders including our Taylor renamed Tutu.

Tutu, not happy
And Heinz, so named because he was put in a Heinz box and thrown in a river and rescued. His foster carer has gone to Berrima for the weekend. She adopted Petal previously. Petal is terrified of Heinz!

Pipped at the post

I thought I was going to outdo Terry today with 6 adoptions.

First an author came from Northbridge (and from north America some time before that). Her previous cat died recently and she is bereft. When she saw Tiger's profile, she decided that a second toothless cat was just what she needed. She brought a young couple with her: an Asian woman and a middle eastern looking man. They too were enthusiastic. Tiger liked them all and drooled. So they know she drools and there were no complaints. They look forward to brushing her daily. She brought a box of food that her previous cat turned up her nose at.

Tiger

Then a young couple came from Earlwood. . . . by public transport with shopping for cat beds and carriers on the way. They had met Scrat and Puss last week and have decided that they cannot live without them. I had softened up Scrat by having lunch with them. It was good to have a couple to do the paperwork: it halved the time it took even though he didn't know her mobile number off by heart. But who can remember more than one 10 digit number! They took a uber home. Scrat and Puss were the easiest cats EVER to get into carriers.
Puss on top of Scrat
And another woman arrived with a pile of cat food that her cats won't eat.

I quickly cleaned and fogged the play place and put Schnitty there overnight. He wasn't so happy initially but will probably settle down. While I was processing Puss and Scrat a couple of Chinese women came in to visit the cats. They asked where all our cats had gone. Adopted, said I. Hurrah, said they.

After quickly seeing the visitors out and feeding everybody, I took off to Bilgola Plateau to process the adoption of 3 fostered kittens. That would make my daily tally 6 cats. A record!

On my way I thought that perhaps tomorrow morning might be a better time than at 6pm. When I got there the mum (the adopter) was still collecting the kids from after-school sports. The dad agreed with me that it might all go better when the kids were at school, or at least fed and out of the way. So we made a date for tomorrow morning.

Then, almost home, I had to drop off some Bravecto for Lasagne/Laurie who is now called Rory. I was instructed to phone the son when I got there. I couldn't quite figure out if the cat lives at the house I was at or somewhere else. It would have been great to see him.

PS There are two kittens in Incoming with Dusty's kittens' names. But they are not grey kittens. So something has happened. Dusty is nowhere to be seen. My guess is that she and her kittens have been put out to foster and the only sign with "2-4months" was put on these new kittens. One is unwell. The other, a ginger, purrs like a trooper.

Lucky in love

I moved Lucky and Finn away from the front door to next to Beauty (separated by layers of duvet covers on both stand alone cages). I looked up who is whom. Finn is the white male and Lucky is the grey and white, medium haired female. The easy way to remember who is whom is "lucky in love" because Lucky loves to be loved on. Anybody will do. Neither of them recognised chicken as food which makes you wonder how they got to be a plump as they are.

Miranda Purr was adopted on Thursday. . . . such a good looking cat.

Miranda Purr

. . . and Schnitty was moved into her condo after I cleaned off her pawprints. He was a bit disgruntled at the move until offered chicken.

Sarah (the burrito cat) was waiting for her share when I got to her condo ("at last!"). She accepted some finger strokes as well as the chicken.

Sarah

But the one who surprised me was Tiger, her next door neighbour. For weeks she has turned her back on any approach but today she stepped up for a pat, scratch, fondle. I didn't go so far as to pull on the matted tags by her left ear. She drooled great drops of crystalline saliva at the joy of being fondled until. . . . she snarled, without provocation or any further action, to show me her huge, solo, canine. Cats are strange. I wonder what she will do next week.

Tiger

And Bibi, who hid under her blankie on Wednesday couldn't get enough cuddles today. She wasn't even interested in the chicken. Just more pats please.

Bibi

Shock news

Cathy went to the vet to have an ultrasound to see if she is pregnant. And it was discovered that she is a he and his undescended testes were removed. Hence the Elizabethan collar. And hence his outrage at being put into girl's gear.

Chris was Cathy
By a strange coincidence, I recently knitted a basset hound for my brother to give to his granddaughter on her first birthday, next week. I made some dresses for it and then some boys' clothes and eventually decided that their names are Cathy and Cagney depending on how they feel on the day.
Cagney with their bag packed ready to go

Cathy dressed for a walk
Back to the cattery:

Toby has one black whisker. He is the brother who hides under his bed. Finn had a bell on his collar but the collar has been removed. He is the one who is everybody's friend. Toby is friendly too and loves a tummy rub but would prefer to be under the bed. I gave him a bath mat to lie on down there.

Toby
Melody is back. She was thought to be pregnant so Steph took her home. She was not pregnant after all (the theme of the day) so now she is in Ashleigh's condo.
Melody
Schnitty went to the vet yesterday. Turns out that his eyelid was turned under so that his eyelashes were scratching his eye. He has had plastic surgery to turn the eyelid outwards. Not happy in a collar but loved the chicken.
Schnitty

Winnie and Quinn went for a vet check this afternoon. Quinn seems to have realized that her family is not going to pick her up. She is sad.

Winne is just glad to get away from Beans who was introduced to the family when she was over a year old and he wasn't desexed until he was going on a year old. He was feeling his hormones and she didn't appreciate the attention. Consequently she is sometimes friendly/sometimes growly. But always beautiful.

Licking the washing up

When I arrived this afternoon Oreo and Lucky had been in the play place overnight and were hiding (probably because the vollies had cleaned everything with super efficiency and speed!) So I took some of the unassembled carry cases in there with me so they could help me put them together. A cat really helps by giving distraction when the b. . . y things won't cooperate. Oreo came out of hiding first and let me take off her too tight collar. She is the mother. Her fur is much better than when she arrived probably suffering from a flea allergy.

Oreo
Soon Lucky (her son) joined us to help finish off their breakfast crunchies. I took off his collar too and there is what looks like a healed pressure sore under it. Those collars had been on for far too long.

Ragged collars

Lucky soon discovered that my shoes smelled amazing. And Oreo discovered the out-the-window view shelf.
Lucky

Shadow (the "sister" of Ellie) was adopted this morning. And Alice took Gia home with tears in her eyes because she couldn't adopt her sister and brothers as well. In the afternoon a father arrived with his daughter for Sasha. They had read on the website that Sasha was overweight but rather baulked when they saw just how plump she is. So I introduced them to the other cats who are available and those who will be coming on line soon. There are some pretty cats among them like Cathy, some loving ones like Malabar and some charming ones like Wilson. But, no, the small girl decided that Sasha was the cat for her. They had looked after a friend's adult cat while the friends were overseas but the "friends" had come home to claim back their cat so she wants one all for herself. They took her home.

Chicken treats this afternoon were not enjoyed by Schnitty who was dropped off by his family last Sunday and has spend the intervening days mourning in a hammock. He has cried himself into unilateral conjunctivitis (or perhaps has a touch of the cat flu). He is miserable. I tried to get him to purr by brushing him but he is having ONE MAJOR SULK.

Schnitty

Blacky was just the same when he arrived at the end of July. But now he is eager for the pats that come with the chicken.

Blacky

He needs a dental before being ready for adoption.

Gracie will do (almost) anything for chicken including coming down with the door open. She certainly has put on weight since she arrived last July.

Autumn and Summer have been trained to help with the licking up of chicken flavoured plastic bags and spoons.
