Adoption Tails: RIcki, Kenji, Cooper and Tigger

1 day: Ricki has settled in extremely well from the minute she got in the front door. Taken over eating well, using the kitty litter with no issues at all. Sleeping on the bed at night and very social with the family and visitors. Not hiding at all. They will be keeping Ricki's name. The family didn't need to keep her in one room to start as she came in as if she had been in here for years, has not hidden at all. 

1 week: No problem taking over. Miss Confidence has settled extremely well. 

1 month: Ricki is delightful and has taken over the home. She is very warm in her personality and friendly and loves affection.

1 day: He's going really well. Eating, drinking and being super clever and using his kitty litter. Kenji has a nice big room to be in and Poppy (the daughter) is there with him. She's been needing a furry best bud for a while, Kenji is her perfect match! The two are loving playing and sleeping.

 

1 week: Kenji is being a very good work buddy with the owner today. He's going great at home. The daughter was sick last week so Kenji spent the whole week with her which she obviously relished. He's met the resident cat and things are going well, there were even some nose kisses. He loves exploring the house.

 1 month: Kenji is the best! He's helping the owner work again today!

He's super social - loves being around people and playing. He is very loved. "Thank you for your wonderful work SAFE does!"

2 days: “He settled into his safe room well, he hid away in the closet and would come out to eat/drink & use the litter. After dinner last night he seemed hungry for some affection so we gave him some pats and the chance to explore the rest of the house - and he spent the whole night going between us and laying on our laps! We’re both so surprised at how fast he’s warmed up to us, we thought it would take a lot longer. He’s such a sweetheart! And he recognises his name so we’ll be keeping it”

1.5 weeks: “Cooper is doing amazingly, he’s pretty much completely out of his safe room and spends most of his time either laying on us or in front of the heater. He enjoys a sleep in and has taken an interest in watching TV (he seems to like cartoons). He’s such a gentle sweet little angel, and he’s so well behaved as well. We feel very lucky to have such a lovely boy in our lives”

1 month: no response

 

Tigger

1 day: “Tigger has settled in well so far. He has found a safe place in my bedroom, but has ventured out to explore a little bit. Tigger has had some dinner but is yet to use the litter tray.” His owner will be keeping his name.

3 days: “Tigger used the litter box last night, and he certainly hasn’t lost his appetite”

1.5 weeks: “I can only describe Tigger as relaxed and comfortable in his new surroundings. He has worked out that Nan (my mother) is a soft touch for treats and happily plays with my support worker when she arrives in the morning. All in all, there are no issues.” 

2 weeks: One issue they’re having is Tigger attacks (scratches) his owner’s support worker when they are helping them put on their shoes. They have given him a ball of wool to play with but he is still attacking the support worker when they are putting on the shoes (he wants to play with the shoes laces). 

5.5 weeks: “Tigger has settled in very well. He is now starting to snuggle up with me at night. I have put strategies in place to avoid repeats of the attacks on my support worker and these seem to be working well.”

 

Joni adopted!

 The potential adopter rang on Wednesday to tell us that he intended to come to get her on Thursday. He has had lots of discussions with his partner and Irene about how shy Joni is and how they have another shy cat so know not to expect anything very soon. And, sure enough, he came on Thursday and did the deed! I hope they are all happy together. 

Fiona (from Isolation) has been moved into her condo. She has been cleared from ringworm (I assume).

And Tigger from Incoming moved into the stand alone by the door. Didn't like being moved. Doesn't like where he is (directly opposite Big Kahuna). But he will get used to it.

Stardust was making love/chirrups to visitors this afternoon. One lass comes regularly to socialize on a Friday afternoon. And one of our enthusiastic cat fosterers came in (with a bag of clean washing) to spend time. She said that she is attracted to the difficult cats. Stardust must have had her pegged!

I put Rebecca in the Top Cat. She was a happy cat. We can't decide if she is a tortie or a racoon. Her colouring is DRAMATIC when seen from the side.

I did one adoption for a foster cat, Luna, in  Dee Why. She will be picked up tomorrow and they are already planing on teaching her how to walk with a harness and to be bonded with their other cat.

Adoption Tails: Tigger

 My afternoon was taken over by a training session about the new computer adoption program that will be installed on May 20. Lots to take in but we have a practice version to play with in the meantime.

So I only had time to quickly give each cat a bit of chicken before it was time to come home. The new cat Suzy is a sweetie . . . . just overwhelmed at being somewhere strange. 

And we are up to 1002 animals taken into Safe. Time for a celebration! And who better to celebrate with than Tigger now called Boston.

Tigger/Boston

1 day: We decided to call him Boston instead as my son wanted to do so. He has been eating and drinking water well, wee three times that I know so far in the litter but no poo yet since he came here yesterday morning. One concern I have is that I noticed distinctive smell from his mouth when I collected him yesterday. I have already mentioned to Tim, he checked Boston's teeth and gums, noticed it is slightly red. He suggested me to get a product called Oxynfresh to add in the water to prevent further infection which I have ordered already. I worry if he is in pain and can't chew dry food as I didn't hear any biting sound when he ate last night. I tried slightly larger dry food this morning I heard he bites so it made me feel better. Boston's eyes are slightly watery and heard sneeze a couple of times..

Luna (resident cat) has been very curious.

1 week: Boston has been great and already interacting with Luna in the same room without fighting at all, they play together and sniff each other for greetings. I hesitated but trusted my guts that they will be fine after I put Boston in the carrier cage and brought him out to show Luna many times a day before let him out. Boston started meowing lots at the door and wanted to get out as well. Boston acts like he has been here for long time already relaxing on the sofa and everywhere.

Boston likes the water with Oxyfresh, I think it is getting better slowly. Smell slightly changed from infection smell to more cat food smell.

1 month: Boston has been very well and settled down with Luna. He has been eating well also. His breath smells still though but maybe I worry too much. I opened an Instagram account for Boston and Luna (@lunandboston)

 Only one adoption today and it doesn't count because it was Lucky who was adopted from foster by vollie Vicky weeks ago and she just did the paperwork today. No follow ups required. He already rules the house, husband and dogs.

Steph brought in a mum and her kittens. The mum, a calico is Star. Her boy kittens are Jupiter (tabbie) and Venus (white). Her girl kittens are Saturn (champagne), Pluto (tortie) and Mars (ginger). They must have all been named when it was too early to tell what sex they were. They formed a very flat universe today when they moved into the Canin condo because some have the flu and one has ringworm. Because they are sick the Canin condo has been rolled back into Incoming and Beauty, Amelia are back beside Jackson.

And Flo, a tiny kitten below Midsummer who goes home with Katie every night. She was dumped in somebody's yard. (It must be exciting at Katie's because she was flaked out all afternoon).

Tigger is where Rufus used to be. You can tell that Tigger is upset about the move, there is food in his bowl.

Rufus in above Sabrina and Tutu. He is to be picked up on Monday. I think he liked being close to the roof but he stayed out of camera range.

And Jackie is below them. She is not well but we don't know what to do to help her tummy. She did like a little bit of chicken.

Coco, who has been on the adoption list for some weeks while in foster, came in because her fosterers are going away. Their other cats came in to board. Coco quickly figured out how to open her condo and passed me while I was sitting close by trying to get mats from Gigi's flanks. I called a warning and when she made a bolt for the front door her fosterer grabbed her. It is never dull at Safe Haven.

 Of Sabrina's kittens, there is still one left, if you don't count Lulu the short haired tuxedo who sticks by her side and hasn't yet been desexed. (I still think that she is a younger ring-in even though she and Tigger had a lovely game of ring-around-the-litter box today). 

We have a new mum and four kittens on Naughty Row. They are mum Violet and Ivy, Clover, Orchid and Natalia.

 But the one that we are really happy to have left is Trixie. She was adopted yesterday by a young couple who just fell in love with her. They know all about her history and possibly expensive future but still took her. Lucky them.

Today the Ringworm pair were upgraded to her condo in the main cat room. They are completely cured and should be ready to adopt. Basil is the bolder kitten. He has a white upside down V on his face.

His brother, Piglet is very shy still. He was the one with the ringworm lesions that needed frequent applications of nasty ointment (he thought it was nasty; it is really very soothing). He hides from people and is protective of food which Basil tends to greedy. I hope there are enough Trixie vibes left in their condo to bring him out of his shell.

I took a chance and added hammocks to the D's and Tommy/Mia's stand alones. The previous hammocks had been used as litter trays before they came down with the flu. I hope it was just cats feeling too poorly to make it to the box.

Two of the D's immediately jumped into the new hammock and had a noisy wrestle.

Tommy is withdrawn. I suspect that all his testosterone has disappeared and he doesn't know whether he is Arthur or Martha. He curled up in the smallest triangular hammock.

The only visitors we had today were a couple of young women who had wanted to walk some dogs at Monika's Doggy Rescue. But it was closed. So they rang to ask if we had any dogs that needed to be walked. I said they were welcome to come visit some cats. They came under strict instructions from their parents that they were NOT to bring home any cats/kittens. They were very restrained. Our new ginger and white boy Ginger was thrilled to see them.

Adoption Tails: From shy to loved

 Tigger was the shyest of the Hercules, Freddy, Molly and Tigger litter of kittens who came to us In September last year. He was the last to be adopted on Jan 9 this year. (His sister Molly died). After not hearing anything from his adopters for a month it was great to get this message with photos.

1 month: Tigger has well and truly come out of his shell. He is getting lots of cuddles. 

What happened to his brothers?

Freddy is now Remi. He was adopted on October 31.

1 day: Freddie didn't eat or drink on Saturday and was hiding all night. His new owner spent a lot of time with him and he is starting to come out of his shell a bit, accepting strokes today.

1 week: Freddy/Remi is settling in well. He still mostly hides under the bed when something scares him, but he is beginning to become a lot more confident. He is very food motivated.

1 month: no word.

Hercules was adopted on Dec 3.

1 day: Hercules doing really well. Still shy but plays with the son of the house and they are giving him space. He will let the son stroke him when he is eating. The dad called to ask if they should be worried that Hercules is very quiet and doesn't make any sounds. I reassured him that he was lucky to have a quiet cat! 

Thereafter: no word.

1 week: Maple is very happy. Eating loads and settling into the house well. Soooo cuddly (when she wants to be).

1 month: Things are great with Maple. She has settled in really well and gets better all the time.

Back to the old days

 I had wondered why Terry was not on with Fiona on Saturday. Today I learned that he had gone to a funeral. Because the funeral parlor lady and he got to talking and soon talked about cats. She has a very fussy, demanding British something-or-other who would not eat the very expensive, exclusive fresh meat that she bought for her. After chatting with Terry, she decided that we might like it. It is in the freezer beside the feeding station.

 She also had visited Peggy Brown's way back when and was glad to get news of her. Sandy filled me in with her latest news. A small ginger kitten found its way into her garden and made friends with her chickens. Peggy trapped it. Called the local vet. Told the nurse not to open the trap until they were in a locked room. The nurse didn't believe her and the kitten escaped. After 4 days the kitten turned up in Peggy's chicken coup again. Peggy has resigned herself to having a kitten. After just a few days, this snarling, frightened kitten accepts cuddles from her. (She has not lost her touch).

A man came in to buy a water fountain. He said he knew us from AWL Ingleside days. He fostered one of the legacy cats, Whiskey. I checked the old blog and there he was! (the cat, not the fosterer).

Lots of critters were adopted in the past week: Darcy and Figgie together, Kingsley (to the lady who came the previous week and couldn't choose between him, Maple and Mr Magoo), Tigger, Angelica, Celeste, Andy, Baby and Tux, Squirrel and Sunshine (although they haven't moved into their new home yet because stuff needs to be bought).

 Poor boy hates his hard, plastic Elizabethan collar. He can't eat anything, or lie down comfortably, or play with his feather or his water bowl. But, after the eyelid adjustment surgery, his eye is open and not sore. (Of course, he is on post op pain meds so nothing should hurt.) He was just as eager for cuddles and chicken as usual.

Finn and Tiger were at the dentist this afternoon. Poor Tiger only had one canine and has been positively friendly for the past week or two. This visit might set her back. I doubt that Finn will mind any extra attention even from a dentist.

I spent some time trying to figure out who is who in the palace. I wrote my conclusions on a piece of paper sticky taped beside their condo cards.

Tigger has the most white on his chest and white lines running from his eyes to his chest.

Hercules is all tabby and instead of the usual M between his eyes on his forehead, he has two parallel marks each side that look almost like apostrophes.

Molly is all tabby too and she has the usual M between her eyes on her forehead.

Then I moved on to Thelma and Louise.

One of them has a half and half face and the other has a white patch on her chest. I wrote them down, stuck the note to the condo and have since forgotten who is who.

How do you made a cat a little horse?

Well, if he is Magnus you carry him into the play place, take off his cone, let him groom all the bits that he can't reach with his cone on, and introduce him to the kittens on the other side of the transparent wall. He purred and purred and must have been a little hoarse when it was time to go back to his condo. As he hasn't really been out of it since his eye was removed, I think he will have to get used to his monocular vision. He certainly didn't try to jump up on anything. He mostly sat and PURRED.

We have new cats. Another grey one, Pommie has been surrendered. He is in hiding and not eating. By the look of his carry cage, he had not left his home in years. It looked as though it had been stored on the top of the shed out back.

There are four new "kittens" in Incoming. They might have been kittens when first noticed in the wild but they are quite big now. Two live at the bottom of a large igloo. The other two sit on a ledge, warily.

Spot and Smudge have returned from being fostered. Spot is supposed to be the friendlier, leader of this bonded pair. When I presented my finger for them to meet me, they both came forward to sniff. Neither minded when my finger patted their cheeks. So I don't know which is which. I did move their stand alone wheely cage to the opposite wall beside the merchandise shelves. They seemed very "distrait" when on the opposite wall being exposed to doors and lights. Much happier in the afternoon. I swapped them with Cathy who is happy wherever she gets attention.

Misty was still in Incoming last Friday. And I didn't get around to sorting out the Wind in the Willow kittens. It will be easier now there are only two left.

His person's daughter is going to adopt Emerald who has been living with Irene and family.

News of Harry and Harley after a week in their new home:

They’re doing good. Took a little longer for Harry to come out from under the bed, but by the end of the week they’ll both play with their new owner. They also took their first steps out of the bedroom and have been exploring the rest of the apartment. 

Sudden noises or larger movements do make them retreat to the bedroom but they come back out shortly after. The owner can get quite close to them as long as s/he doesn’t touch them and they are comfortable enough to eat in the human's presence and outside the bedroom.
