More adoptions

 A busy weekend. Not only was Mia adopted but her next door neighbour Harry was adopted too. And so was Felicity the kitten.

 And Teddy and GiGi have been adopted by our Natalie.

Lola is doing well. She is in a small condo and has a huge plastic cone on. But seems to be happy to be home. (The pain killers probably help). There is a fund raising effort on Facebook to try to recoup the price of her operation.

Cordelia was sent to the vet to be desexed. And they discovered that she is pregnant. So she is back in her condo, enjoying the pregnancy rations and looking as slim as she was last week.

 We had a new kitten for a short while. Choco was whisked off to be fostered.

And Mateo is back in a hard collar for another week. He bumped his wound in the soft collar . . . . probably when racing around like a mad thing. He had a turn in the play place where he can't get up to full speed.

Aziza's kittens (in Isolation) are very interested in eating her food. Unfortunately the crunchies make them vomit. So we separate Aziza in a carrier to eat her crunchies with a side of wet food while the littles have just the wet food. They love it.

Fun with the bins today included magots! Somebody filled the Willoughby bin in the basement and it was left there yesterday because two others were taken out to the pavement (including the cracked one that I had left upside down in the basement to NOT be filled).

That cracked bin will be collected by Willoughby council within the next three working days. It is on the sidewalk. . . . upside down.

Firsts

1. First time I ever washed a cat.

Natalie left a note asking if I could use a special ringworm shampoo on Teddy this afternoon. Before putting on the antifungus cream. I found the stuff and read the directions. You have to wet the cat all over, massage in the shampoo, leave the lather on the cat for 10 minutes. Then rinse it off and dry off the cat. 

The directions also said that any cohabiting cats should be washed as well.  GiGi!

I was prepared to do Teddy because he is a pussy cat. But baulked at GiGi. Natalie said not to bother with the other cat direction.

So we had a bath. I used a couple of the big red basin buckets so that the sink wouldn't get contaminated. 

Teddy, of course, was very tolerant. What he has had to put up with! I think he liked being rubbed dry best but he gave me such a look when I put him back with dirty GiGi. But he was all dry and comfy by the time I anointed him with the fungus ointment just before I left.

Suki had two lots of interested visitors. She was out and about when they visited and behaved like a prima donna. Later on when Geoff fed her, she yelled at him that she wanted more, warmer, fresher, etc, etc.

I changed Jule and Bass's hammock for the right kind rather than the square ones. They cuddled up together in the narrower hammock.

The kittens except Mateo in the stand alone there were taken to the vet last thing today to see if they do have flu or are just stuffy kittens. Mateo loved being alone and settled on my lap to have his eye ointment and pill.

Nova still hasn't ventured upwards in her stand alone. We will move her to a condo as soon as one becomes available.

But the GOOD NEWS is that Chad has gone to a foster home which will probably be permanent. The lucky fosterer left a box of goodies for us as well. 

2. I didn't succumb because I didn't get around to having my lunch all afternoon. . .  another first.

 I made room on the top shelf of the laundry shelves by putting the ping pong balls into the toy drawers and consolidating other toys. There are two piles of towels there now.

I was going to throw the large plastic pot that the ping pong balls came in but was distracted by holding kitten duty while the Palace was cleaned. Tom Claws decided to climb into the pot. Later Hui Hui climbed in and Tim W carried her to show what a clever girl she is.

So that is why the pot is in the Palace. They have all that space and choose to be confined! 

Hui Hui is the lightest of the three and needs to be encouraged to eat. Tulip in Isolation with Tilly doesn't need encouragement to eat but she has a blocked nostril (R) and wheezes. I had to move GG and Teddy because the hinge on their condo 6 failed.

But because kittens have been adopted I moved various cats.

Nova is where Missy used to be. She stayed at ground level all afternoon. I wonder if, having only one functioning eye, she finds 3D difficult.

Next door, in "Lola's stand alone" is Celine Dion. She got the jumping from level to level without any problem. The two boys (Cheesecake and Waffle) were the quickest adoption ever because Sue gave the new owner the folder of info yesterday. She took it home and read it thoroughly.

I also moved Annabelle and Emily into Welfare. They settled down very well.

And Kyle has settled down very nicely. He is such a friendly cat but very difficult to get a photo of because he is completely black.

A woman visited and fell in love with Chad. She may be back.

Another woman visited and feels that Suki might be good for her but has had experience with Siamese who pee in public before so thinks she should foster to adopt to see if they can live happily together.

A variety of worms

 Three of Annabelle's male progeny went to be desexed today. One of them passed a worm while at the vet's! So everybody got a worming pill when they got home. The three boys have gone into Jacob's condo because he has been moved to Lola's stand alone.

He wasn't very happy there. But we really needed his double condo. And perhaps some of the ragdoll magic will rub off this weekend and he will get adopted. He almost did this afternoon when a family took ages to decide not to get Chandler or his brother.. . . or Jacob. Perhaps they will be back tomorrow.

So Didley, Jaffa and Beanie were put into the condo next to Chelsea. All her kittens have been adopted.

And she has decided that people are OK after all.

Billy came back from his foster home and has taken a week or so to settle back into the institutional routine. He is less upset than he used to be but still not up to pats.

The big news is that Big Kahuna was adopted. Lucky them. And his enclosure was thoroughly cleaned (thank you Sharon) so that Tilly's three big kittens (her own) could move in there. . . . and get adopted asap.

The sad news of the day (apart from the number of poo bags on the verandah) is that GG and Teddy have been moved to Isolation. His worm has been confirmed by the vets as ringworm.

 Three tiny ones arrived and are in Incoming. No names no pack drill.

In the meantime, Sunny and Alexa are the lucky last ones next to the Big Kahuna. Alexa has just made it to desex weight so will be booked in asap. Her last remaining brother should be adopted sooner rather than later. She will be able to finish her own meals then. They have been moved to Lola's stand alone.

We pulled their enclosure away from the wall. What a lot of litter was under the walls! Now it has all been cleaned out. The hammocks (which the kittens were using as toilets) are in my washing machine. We sterilized it as well as could be and rehung the sheets. Then Irene moved Julie and Bassuria in. She did one cat at a time. Encouraged them into boxes and used the cardboard shields to keep them in the box while she gently carried them through a passageway formed of sheet covered Top Cat and similars.

  Don't know why we worried. They behaved perfectly. I think Biggie and Mia will like their new neighbours.

 After weeks of various treatments which he suffered with great patience and purrs, Teddy has finally had his ingrowing eyelash problem operated on and solved (we hope). He came back from surgery this afternoon quite wobbly and with a plastic cone. But Gigi was there to look after him.

Tango wasn't leaping about. Her right front leg still hurts. Or maybe she is missing Fluff.

Sheridan brought in Savannah and her kitten. A vollie sent her bloke in to adopt the kitten. Sheridan trimmed his nails and had a really good, farewell cuddle.

The stand alone in Incoming has been repopulated with kittens and mums. This lot came from a fosterer. And also had a poo fest in the carrier during the trip.

There is a mother cat who is very friendly and her 7 kittens. And the mother's now grown up offspring, and her single, medium haired kitten. The daughter mother is wary of people, as is her kitten. But the other kittens didn't mind having their poo'y feet cleaned. No names so far. Granny A and the little A's, Daughter B and the B-son?

PS: Either Elsie or Eliza was posted on the website and adopted today. She lasted 10minutes.

Maggot season

 Has returned. There were 14 rubbish bags on the verandah this morning. When I moved them into the rubbish bins across the road (all the big ones were full) I uncovered a mass of moving maggots. Tuesday folk need to be reminded to take the oldest bags out first.

It is also kitten season. We have a new one where Vader was. (Vader was adopted.) No prizes for guessing what colour a kitten called Tar is!

And Fuff was adopted today. The kitten he came with whom I called Duff has been renamed Tango. She has been desexed but is still wearing a collar. And she has a sore front right leg. She doesn't put any weight on it. She is in the Welfare area all by herself now.

Joy wanted to take photos of Ginger Roger's kittens but we decided that it was easier to take a group shot of them. (Ginger Roger has been renamed to something like Rosin . . . Irish for red headed, perhaps)

And in Isolation, Mateo's siblings are growing up fast. They know where their food comes from now and squeal for it.

PC has a bare patch behind his left ear and on top of his head. I wonder if it is a side product of the special diet. Aslan seems to have bare patches as well and he is on the same diet. As is Tommy but he doesn't seem less hairy!

We left Teddy and GG in charge in Welfare.Teddy's eyes are both squintty. It is ingrowing eyelashes rather than a curable infection. . . unfortunately.

A quiet afternoon

 The only visitors were a young lass who has been before to spend time with the cats. She brought a friend this time. They had a fine time and will return. Teddy has got very used to being handled because of needing eye ointment three times a day. His condo mate Gigi has decided that "cuddles" are good for her too. The two visitors had a lap cat each.

I don't know whether I miscounted or kittens have disappeared.

And Zali (also named Pansy) the pregnant mum in Incoming has rubbed off skin on her sides. Tim thought it might have been a reaction to fleas. I thought it was because her tummy is so round that she scrapes it on the sides of the porthole that leads to her bedroom. As the anti-flea medication didn't help the tummy wounds, Tim agreed that she be moved into condo 6 in Isolation. The portholes are much larger there!

Gigi's owner would not like this adoption shared but rest assured that she is very well settled in and is a little foodie!

3 days: Ash is doing really well. He’s homed happily in the master bedroom with litter and food separate. He’s eating his morning and evening meals and is drinking some water. “There’s lots of beautiful purrs and sleeping. We’ve renamed him Winston after much family debate.” While their resident cat has been locked in another room, Winston has been out to explore and smell before returning to his safe room. “Both cats now aware of each other and we’ll look at having them on the same floor later in the week.”

1.5 weeks: “Winston is doing amazing.” The introductions went well and both cats are now living alongside each other. “Our older cat just watches Winston play and run around with toys. We have a large cardboard box that they both sit in and peek out of which is super cute.”

 1 month: “Winston is doing great. Loves playing, is eating really well and has beautiful loud purrs when snuggling.” Despite having separate sleep blankets in the lounge, he sleeps next to their older resident cat Tigs.

1 day: "I'll say it right now Jade is the perfect kitten." She's confident, playful and so affectionate. She followed the owner's son around all night and spent most of the evening hanging out in his bedroom chilling. The owner left her in her quiet room to sleep the night because she started to get more and more playful as it got later and they wanted her to have her rest. Jade had her breakfast this morning at 7am and came back to burrow into the owner's bed to sleep some more together. She's used the litter a few times and loves her food. The family won't be changing her name as she seems to be responding to Jade. "We definitely won the lottery with her."

1 week: Jade's really settling in well. Definitely has her energy spurts especially since the family were away all day for work/school but the owner is working from home on Thursday and Friday so the two are enjoying each other's company. As soon as she switches the lights off at night, Jade settles down and either cuddles up for a sleep or goes off and does her own thing but settles quickly. She's still food crazy so they're just controlling that. Otherwise she's wonderful.

2 weeks: Lucky is happy. He is eating and using his litter box. Lots of rubs and purrs for the owner but he doesn’t like her husband much. He mainly stays in his owner’s room and sleeps on their bed. He’s still cautious about going into other parts of the house and is starting to play as well.

2.5 weeks: Lucky is settling in and making baby steps towards being confident. “Loves his food!”

 40 days: He lets them pet him and play. He sleeps on the bed and “eats like a horse”. He won’t let them pick him up. He is getting used to the rest of the house and loves his sunbeams. He’s settling in but his owners wish he would be more cuddly.

 

 

Double bunnies

 Coco and her original friend Lily (they didn't get along together) were desexed yesterday. Today they were both decidedly seedy. Lily hid in her green igloo and Coco sulked in her litter tray. When I arrived Lily's rabbit run was on top of Coco's. So that I couldn't open Coco's flap to clean her and give her new food (which she wasn't interested in anyway). So I moved the couch out of the vestibule to the hallway outside and positioned Lily in her rabbit run there. Not one of the vollies noticed that the couch was outside and the there was a different rabbit in the vestibule.

They were all too excited to be coming to work at Safe Haven, of course.

Especially excited as we have a pair of 9-10 year old Persians, Gigi and Bambi who are very close. They are super friendly and love to be brushed even though they don't look as though they have had much attention recently.

Augustus and Darcee are looking much better. The vets who treated them asked after Augustus. 

A couple arrived early (around 11am) to ask to adopt a kitten that I thought would be suitable for their family (!) We chose Lunar because 1. She looked like the first cat that he had and 2. because Annie was a bit off colour this morning. All adoptions should be so easy. I said as they left that if they found that one kitten was not enough for their 2 kids, they should come back and get Sunny tomorrow. They might.

Mia in Incoming has been reunited with her Tommy out back. He is pleased. He gets twice the food and all the cuddles this way because she holds back. Their kittens had a wonderful time without Mia. There was mess all over their condo twice this morning. But Rod eventually sorted them out.

Violet had 5 babies on Sunday. I looked up my colour book and found the following names:

Joy found more purple names: 

Ones I don't like as they are not purple enough: Sapphire, Iris, Topaz, Bluebell.

Ones' I do like: Lilac, Lavender, Amethyst, Roxo (Portuguese for purple. Confirmed by my husband who was born in Portugal and lived there until a teenager. He pronounces it Rocho which is a splendid name for a hyperactive kitten), Viola or Violeta.

This is an excellent example of why it is best to have just one person naming kittens.
