New adoption proceedure

 We are now using Shelter Buddy to process our adoptions. It is supposed to be more efficient. But it doesn't add the adopted cats names to the calendar so that they can be followed up. I hope this will be done somehow or my Adoption Tails will be cut short.

Since last Friday, Dabi, three of Violet's kittens (only Orchid is left) and the pair in the stand alone by the printer have been adopted. Plus the lift is on the blink. Often the door fails to open on our floor. You have to continue up to the second floor and walk down a flight. Poor Robyn had an accident on the stairs last week. Plus the trolley has lost three of the four bolts that attach one of its four wheels. That was the only photo I took today so that Geoff can bring the appropriate bolt to fix it on Friday.

But Joy took some lovely photos especially of this gorgeous cat who has finally come out of hiding. S/he is Akela or Rafiki.

And Baby, a 16 year old, white cat in the stand alone that Wanda and her kitten family lived. She is loud (possibly deaf) but very sweet. I took Midsummer to Catsie and Michael to be delivered to the Avalon vet tomorrow morning. She will need an X-ray first to make sure that her diaphragmatic hernia is all fixed before being desexed. She certainly looks healthy enough. Not like poor little Florence who is full of flu. Her nose is completely blocked so that she can't smell the food. But if you put it in her mouth she can taste it and realizes that she is hungry. She ate well today by being hand fed by me.

I tested the "pick up a rabbit and give it a cuddle" technique demonstrated by our intern last week. It worked on Coco. But not on Lily. They have furry bottoms of their feet instead of pads.

And I took pity on the tuxedo Coffee Shop kitten who was most often on the bottom of the pile in their triangular hammock with his butt hanging half off it. I gave them a square hammock which fits much better.

Short Friday

 I kept my visit short this afternoon to limit exposing vollies to my bug. And to distribute the expected chicken.

Monica was desexed last week and her wound looks a bit red and gappy. Dr Kim inspected it this morning, cleaned it up and said that it should be OK if she is allowed to lick it clean. Some cats don't react well to the glue that is used instead of stitches. But she seems happy enough.

The Ginge who was in the play pen is now below Hanna and sneezing mightily. His mum, Sabrina is very pretty and friendly.

Ulysses and his two rag doll house mates are back in the Palace (The coffee shop kittens have been moved to the D's stand alone because they have all be adopted). Ulysses had play time there. After his hour and a half, Violet and co moved in. He was not impressed.

Where Ruby and her three kittens were, are Bingo and Pickles. I have the feeling that they were in a foster home. They are super friendly and won't last long. Sorry, Terry, I didn't get around to putting more cat carriers together for you.

Adoption Tails: Thanks Sydney

Jackson, adopted April 26, 22

Jackson

1 day: He's purring like crazy. Eating dry food and roast chicken, and drinking water. He's been renamed Archie. He has been sitting next to his new owner while she's working.

1 week: no follow up.
1 month: Archie is great. He's very settled and has a massive appetite.  He loves to sleep on the owner's bed, and on her arm when she's typing on the computer. "He definitely rules the roost!"

 

 

Basil and Piglet, adopted May 1, 22

B & P day 1

1 day: They have settled in well, and are out and about playing with  each other, chasing around. They used the litter, are eating plenty and are being vocal. They are getting used to their new owners, Basil is more confident and will let you pick him up, purrs and likes attention. 
Piglet is still a little nervous but will still approach if you have food and will let you touch him. Their names were changed: Basil is George and Piglet is Edward. They have been causing havoc, chasing each other and knocking plants over.

1 week: They're doing really well,  running around a lot and chasing each other, eating well. George is very comfortable now. Edward is still quite nervous but making progress and getting more confident

1 month: They're really settled, in a good routine. They're eating, playing and cuddling with their owners. Everyone is happy

B & P 1 month

 

Pecan, adopted May 5, 22
1 day: He settled in instantly and has been so inquisitive and cuddly since he was brought home. He's been renamed Basil/Baz and is starting to respond to his name. He used the litter tray in the first 30 minutes and has been eating and drinking lots. "We've got the perfect kitten!". 
Stacy and her family did an amazing job raising him to be so friendly.

 

Pecan, day 1

1 week: He's going so well. He was exploring from the moment he was brought home. He sleeps a lot during the day and gets very playful at night time. He hasn't been shy or scared at all.

 1 month: He's got a huge 1.5m climbing post which keeps him fit and entertained during playtime. At night he sleeps in a few different beds around the apartment. He seems to be a very happy kitty, is eating well and loves a cuddle on their lap watching TV. He's responding to his name too.

 George, adopted May 9, 22

1 day: He is doing really well, he is very affectionate and has used the litter tray. He has eaten all his meals and is such a sweet boy. "He is the absolute sweetest cat I've ever met"

1 week: He's settling in well and is a bit crazy when they try to eat something. He is super cuddly and sweet and is exploring rooms. He has been renamed Biscuit. He is meowing a lot, even when he's being patted. It's all the time, but mostly when he is hungry. He sat outside the bathroom door when his owner was showering and meowed a lot.

 

1 month: He is really good. He has explored all of the rooms but he still isn't a big fan of the bedroom. He also is still very vocal but we are working with him on that! Today is the first morning he hasn't meowed since 6am for food! He still loves cuddles and is really fond of kisses on his head and he likes to try and climb up the owner's leg for hugs. If she holds him, he will wrap his arms around her neck and snuggle in as well. He is such a sweet cat. Very affectionate and full of 
personality!

George 1 week

 I wasn't at Safe yesterday but Robin and Catsie took some photos to share.

Beauty wasn't turffed out of her stand alone so that it could go to Westfield over the weekend. She has taken to the cat carrier that I installed for her.

Adoption Tails: Ruby

Remember the nice older man who came the day after we chatted on Wednesday to adopt Ruby (who was returned because she bit the previous, "extremely experienced" adopters:

1 day: "Ruby is a real sweetie! She is a little timid but very smoochy. She likes to spend time close to me and has eaten a couple of times and used the litter tray. She seems to be settling in remarkably well. She doesn't show any inclination to bite or scratch. I have given no thought to a new name.

1 week: I feel like I have hit the jackpot with Ruby, she is so sweet and gentle. She is settling in remarkably smoothly, not much sign of shell. She has been a lapcat since the 2nd evening and sleeps on my bed at night and other times. She has been out the backdoor a few times but is very much a homebody so I don't have to worry she will slip out a door and disappear. She seems very content, so all bodes well.”

1 month: In the early days Ruby would sometimes stare at me with a quizzical expression, presumably wondering why she wasn't in her old home with her old staff.  But she has settled into a routine now.  She hasn't turned out to be a lap cat but she has various places she likes to sleep, mainly in the house.  But like other cats before her, she often sits on the bench outside the back door where she can enjoy the sun and see what's doing in the house at the same time.  She sleeps on my bed every night, and often in the daytime on these cold days.  So all in all she seems to be doing fine.

Adoption tails: Coco again

 Further news of Coco who was adopted a month ago:

1 month: We are amazing! Coco is good in the unit. We are the best of friends.

 She would still like to open a window if she could, but is happy and content. I refuse to sleep with her. She thinks bed time is play time. So I shut the lounge room off at night. She doesn't like it but she is as good as gold. 

Coco often goes and has a sniff in the corridor. Comes back on her accord.

This morning, we walked down to the vet and she had her nails cut. She was a good girl. She really says thank you when I care for her.

Rufus, adopted April 26, 22

Rufus at home

 1 day: Rufus is staying in a separate room. He ate a little bit of dry food before hiding at the top of the room, has not drank nor toileted yet.

1 week: Still spends much of the day at the top but will come down for food, water and toilet. He is curious and looks at his owner & others when they come into his room.
1 month: Rufus is really good. Most of the time he is on the ground and playing with the resident cat. Unexpectedly they are super friendly with each other. Rufus is being spoiled and gaining weight so he won't fit into the roof soon.

Piglet, adopted April 3, 22. Now called Luci

1 month: She is doing well and emailed some photos Luci napping with Donna the dog.

Visited by poo bag fairies

 I have a very sore throat (RAT negative) so I was delighted on this very cold morning to arrive at Safe to find the balcony empty of poo bags. Many thanks to the poo bag fairies who made my morning easier. Last week there were 26 bags to take down.

No adoptions today but a young woman arrived to check out our kittens. The family cat died a year and a half ago and the family feels ready to take on another. She was taken by Ebby (being our smallest kitten available) but has to share the decision with her mother and her sister. She will be back when they get home from holidays. Some folk take a long time to get over a cat.

On the other hand, an older woman rang to ask if we have any kittens. Her cat died of liver failure aged 17 two weeks ago and she is bereft without a cat in the apartment. She will come on the weekend when her "boys" can drive her. They can also show her our web site as she doesn't do computers.

The Supermodel litter (Cindy, Helena, etc) are getting a bit friendlier but do not like having stuff put in their eyes. Luckily only two need the uggy ointment. So the other two are getting more pats.

I made a couple of hammocks for the Cannin Condo. Star's kittens say that only one kitten fits at a time.

They are still sneezing although their ring worm lesions look better.

Wanda is off to be desexed tomorrow. (She is looking positively plump). Monica is off for the op as well.

Last night Tim had to rush Adelaide to the vets because he was very sick. Didn't hear what happened. Sydney looked lonely.
